You are living in the past. For the form factor, they need that space for drives and internals. If you need a cd/dvd drive - get an external one and plug it into the USB port.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It's not living in the past when you need it because the databases are on dvd's and some of the proprietary software one uses requires a boot able CD...and movies you rent from red box while on the road and cooped up in hotels or deployed to a desert locstion and streaming is not available...in built dvd is kind of nice then (when external drives are not practical due to space restrictions. But thank you for the 'past' assertion
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Most new laptops DO NOT have DVD ROM. Software is distributed electronically, movies steamed from online services can be downloaded to your hard drive and watched later. Next on the chopping block will be traditional USB ports being replaced by Thunderbolt. This machine is a 2 in 1, which means legacy ports and media are sacrificed to prolong battery life and to reduce the size and weight of the machine with legacy stuff being relegated to a Thunderbolt dock or some kind of hub. It may not be the same, but it is a specific tool for a specific job. If you need those other features, look at the Precision line of laptops which is more of a Desktop replacement Workstation laptop.
