If you just need to get the info off the drive and aren't planning on using it full time as an external drive, just hook up the connections without actually putting it in the enclosure. Get your info off and store your drive for later use if you need to. Also, sometimes when you pull a laptop drive out there are mounting brackets that you still have to remove, and that might be your problem. Check it close and see if that might be the issue.
