A: The older drives are ATA, not SATA. The SATA connectors plug onto a slot and the ATA drives plug into pins. The drives with pins will not work.

A: Sounds like you're trying to run an application from the drive you pulled out of your Dell. Some programs will work but most will be required to be reinstalled as they have required entries in the Windows Registry. Think of the windows Registry as a library of instructions for all your installed programs that tells Windows how various functions of the applications work. If they aren't in the registry, Windows doesn't know how the programs are supposed to work.
