Hi DP. It's Vince with Dyson. The rotating brush used to clean the carpet is powered by the suction of the vacuum itself. The turbine powered brush bar can be deactivated for sensitive flooring and carpets. We will be happy to answer any additional questions regarding the functionality of the DC39 via email at [email protected]. Best wishes, Vince P.
