“Is the motorhead on this powered by the moving air or a separate motor in the head? It is not clear how the carpet brush is powered in the description. Does the head have its own electric motor driving the brush, or is it using the passing air from the vacuum to turn the brush?”

Hi DP. It's Vince with Dyson. The rotating brush used to clean the carpet is powered by the suction of the vacuum itself. The turbine powered brush bar can be deactivated for sensitive flooring and carpets.
