“How would one go about cleaning the ink jets in this type of inkjet printer, if the need arises? If the printer goes a while without printing and the inkjets get clogged or plugged how would the user clean the inkjets.”

Go to the Maintenance option in Settings and select Head Cleaning... it will use some ink.
