It acquires GPS satellite almanac information via satellite radio signals (can take up to 10 minutes if it has been turned off more than a day) and the traffic information via its power-cord that is also an antenna (there is a radio traffic broadcast signal Garmin can receive). You don't speak to this model, but it speaks to you as it has an internal speaker.... mostly notices that your next exit is up ahead, etc.
