Yes, it is normal to make that sound. If your load is a super size load or you select an extra rinse and spin cycle then the sound will be much more pronounced!

It rotates back and forth to clean your clothes. The drive system will engage at the start of agitate and disengage when agitate is complete. This occurs multiple times during the wash. We suggest to view the following link which includes videos of the sounds you may hear during agitation- TOP LOAD WASHERS - NOISES HEARD DURING AGITATION: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=21894 - Normal operating sounds are also described on page 26 of the Owner's Manual at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-90576-3.pdf - Any other sounds may require a technician for diagnosis. If necessary, you can contact GE Appliance Service at 1-800-432-2737 for assistance or conveniently schedule an appointment online at GEAppliances.com - We hope this is helpful. Keep in touch! Sue
