This machine will read and write all media formats included is CD -RW. -Read/Write disks (RW) and +Read/Write (RW) disks are different formats but they each Read and Write. The same is true with DVDs which is another type of optical disk. The disk player is called optical because a laser beam both reads and writes from or to the disk. hope this clears up your question.
