• No phone needed, but to see what you are taking a photo of beyond aiming the camera, the free download app to your smart phone is recommended. Once you connect to a wireless connection, you can see what you are taking a photo or video of for adjustment and for adequate selfie use from a distance when the camera is stationary.

• Not to use the camera but you will need to sync it to a device to make changes to the settings.

• No, but it works best when connected to a phone as it does not have a screen. I use it a lot without my phone when I am taking pictures at events. It is just a "shoot and hope" kind of situation.
