It needs to be plugged in for the CarPlay function to work. If it's not plugged in that icon is not lit up and nothing happens when you touch it.

You have to plug in the micro usb. Sound quality is way better though. You can do Bluetooth connection if you didn't want to be connected

You must plug up with a lightning cord to use CarPlay.

Your phone will need to be connected to the USB connection there are 2 USB connections make sure to plug your phone into the one that has the USB symbol on it the other one will say ipod. Car play will only work when your phone is connected via USB connection. Although your phone will connect via Bluetooth and you can use the phone through the radio just will not be the same as car play.
