A:AnswerNope, a water filter comes with it and an automatic dial that turns depending on how much you use it and it will tell you when you need a new filter insert. The Plastic filter holder remains in the water resevoir until you need to change the filter in it.
They say the filter insert about every 2 months but I'm sure it would last longer.

A:AnswerYes, there are several companies that make re-usable ones that can be filled with any coffee you desire. I currently use one for the carafe and single cup. I should also mention that I buy my coffee from a coffee shop and have it ground with a number 6 setting so I cannot speak to the quality of the "off the shelf" ground coffee.
