• Nope, a water filter comes with it and an automatic dial that turns depending on how much you use it and it will tell you when you need a new filter insert. The Plastic filter holder remains in the water resevoir until you need to change the filter in it. They say the filter insert about every 2 months but I'm sure it would last longer.

• Only if you want or need filtered water. The machine operates perfectly without a filter.
