“My area has very hard water. Does the filter on this model also filter the water to the ice maker, or just the water dispenser? I’m wondering if I need to install an in-line water filter just for the ice maker.”

I think the the filter treats both drinking and ice water. However, you should check this with KitchenAid. However, I don't think the filter removes hard water ions.
