  • QuestionYou are able to install an internal SSD in this laptop after purchasing right? Or would buying from Lenovo with an SSD installed and attaching an external hard drive for storage be a better play? Going to need to upgrade the RAM anyway

    Asked by JmasterJ.

    • Answer fortunately for you by adding an SSD drive you will not void your warranty because the US government ruled that people have a right to to do maintenance on their own machines however that part will not be covered under warranty and if you break anything in the process it will not be covered either. I'm using voice to text so forgive me for for grammar.

  • QuestionWill there be any problems generating a copy of the 1TB Hard Drive and replacing it with an SSD? Any issues regarding drivers or product keys/licenses?

    Asked by Johnny.

    • Answer There should be no problem. I wiped/formatted the factory C drive and reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 10 version 1803 with my USB flash drive and my license remained intact. To copy the content of the 1TB HDD to a SSD drive, you can use a disk cloning program. Just make sure the SSD hard drive is large enough to accept the 1TB disk image transfer. What I did was to repartition/resize the 1TB HDD into two partitions - 200GB for the Windows C drive and the rest for my apps and media. When I install a SSD drive later, I would clone my 200GB C drive to the SSD drive.

  • QuestionLenovo Q&A page regarding this laptop states max possible mem 32Gb, BestBuy tech specs here says 16. So, is it 16 or 32 max? Is there a physical M.2 Slot inside this particular model? Thank You.

    Asked by ptiZZa.

    • Answer I know of Legion Y530s running 2x16(=32)GB dual-channel 2666 DDR4 SO-DIMMs with the 32GB Optane m.2/NVMe3.0 module RAIDed to a 2TB Seagate Barracuda Pro SATA HD. It's a configuration that Lenovo will NOT sell you, REFUSES to support and also VOIDS the warranty. Battery runtimes shorten accordingly and, even on AC power, the internal battery might start discharging under peak system loads. The improved cooling design still manages to avoid thermal throttling (at the cost of fan noise). You will need to reset/rebind (or disable) the TPM2.0 module in order to swap in the 2TB SATA HD.

  • QuestionIs there a slot for SSD? Can we add it in the future if we want?

    Asked by SK.

    • Answer You can replace the SATA drive with a SATA 2.5" SSD. Use a SSD maker's website to check compatibility. Also, disregard the "it's not upgradable and it'll void the warranty". US federal law (Mag-Moss Warranty Act) allows for you to service your own system and won't void the warranty - unless you damage it.* The upgraded component won't be covered by the laptop warranty, rather it'll be covered under its own warranty. Also, you can upgrade the RAM too. *I'm not a lawyer. Manufacturers try to make you believe it'll be voided but that isn't the case. It's a scare tactic they use to make you pay more for another model or for their own upgrade. Upgrade/service at your own risk as damages won't be covered. The FTC has plenty of information on this. Do a quick web search on the law or contact the FTC if uncertain. If not comfortable with doing the upgrade, Geek Squad can do the service for you.
