Yes you can, installed a Samsung 970 m.2 nvme. You will need the screw because it's not installed. Also Samsung has free cloning software to clone it so it will boot from the nvme

Laptop does have an M.2 port. 1TB HDD has a boot sector and is configured as your primary boot device in BIOS/UEFI. I had to add a M.2 device and reformat the original 1TB drive and install the OS on the M.2 device to get what you wanted (boot from SSD and 1TB HDD as storage). You can also try a drive image utility to copy the drive from the 1TB HDD to a M.2 SSD then wipe the 1TB HDD and set the SSD as primary boot device and see if it works.
