Soft foods will get forced through the screening and removed, but hard things will be left in the little basket in the tub floor. You remove it by twisting it in the direction labelled on it and wash it in the sink. Do this weekly and you will not have issues at all.

The manufacturer also recommends running the dishwasher empty once per month with a dishwasher cleaning product. Both of these items seem to be recommended by most manufacturers for suggested maintenance, regardless of whether or not the unit has a built-in disposal or the home has soft water.
