That depends on how much you intend to save on your laptop. There are always flash drives that can save much of your essays if you feel that storage will be a problem. 128gb is more than enough to last you a long time in college and you can always delete old things that you don't need to gain back some storage space. Google drive also gives 15gb of free space I believe. You can also email the documents to yourself if you don't have much space left. There are many ways to save for storage so I don't think you should worry about the storage space needed but then again it depends on how much work you want to save.

So the speed of the laptop. 8gb of Ram is great. Stay away from 4gb. As far as storage. 128 Is more than enough for school. Most computers use a portion of of the storage in order to run. So you might have 100 GB when you turn you surface on. Again, more than enough. Nowadays you can go online like Dropbox or OneDrive if you need extra storage.
