You can use external hardrives that are usb 3.0 my son personally uses a seagate external and it works extremely well. The 500 gb is a difficult question since some games are between 40-50 gb but others can be in the 80's by the time downloadable content is added into the picture. I'd estimate it could hold between 8 to 10 games which is quickly filled up.
