Bought my wife the Nikon 9600 for Christmas (Dec/2014) and it came with one Nikon EN-EL12 L-ION Battery. I also purchased two spare batteries that are "compatible" (OEM, Not Nikon) with EN-EL12, along with an external charger. The Original Nikon when fully charged, will take approximately 230 to 280 pictures. It is also dependent upon whether the Flash (Indoor/Evening) is used extensively or not; as well as the amount of time picture preview mode being utilized. As for the OEM/Compatible batteries, they are not quite as good as the Nikon Original, but almost; typically yielding between 200 to 250 pictures. The OEM Brand that we have are Vivitar, but there are other OEM Brands out there as well. However, the Vivitar Batteries received higher Customer Reviews, than these other OEM Brands. The external Charger appears to charge the battery quicker than the Nikon Micro-USB to Camera Adapter. Not sure if your Spare Batteries are Original Nikon EN-EL12, or OEM Branded. I might be suspicious of the OEM/Manufacturer of the spare batteries. I should not think that your batteries have gone thru their Use/Shelf-Life, as most smaller (Cell-Phone and Camera) L-ION batteries last 2 to 4 years of normal use; and the Coolpix s9600 has only been around for less than 2 years, I think.
