“can this be combined with rear speakers for full surround sound? I have 2 rear speakers, and was thinking about adding a 3.1 soundbar/subwoofer, but don't know if I can combine them. I'd assume 3.1 means, front, left and right channels, so if I have 2 rear channels and a receiver that can handle it, would it sound like full surround?”

You cannot add your own speakers to this. This item gives you the surround "feel". It can do 5.1 DTS decoding, and more. The other speakers that can be added are not for giving the unit a conventional surround sound setup.
