A:Answer Measure the voltage at the outside doorbell button. You need a minimum 16VAC to run the Ring Pro. I had to order a new 16v 30va doorbell transformer on Amazon as mine was an older doorbell 10v 5va transformer.
If you don't have voltage at the doorbell button, then you have a bad wire or transformer more than likely. Find the transformer, put a meter on it. Set it to measure AC.
If you don't want to mess with any of that, yes, you can buy the Ring voltage adapter, and plug it in near the Ring doorbell (if your lucky enough to have an outlet (outside) right next to it). Most don't, and anyone walking up to the house can easily disable it by unplugging it, but by that time, they will have been recorded.
If you go the outside power adapter route, you will also need to buy the Ring "ringer" (don't know the proper name for it), but it basically plugs into an outlet INSIDE the house, and makes whatever doorbell sound you program it for inside the house instead of your old doorbell.
On that note, I will say, I believe you could get away WITHOUT it and just use your cell phone for doorbell or any MOTION activity alerts. I have the alerts setup on my and my wife's phones, and they are so fast and accurate, both phones go off as people park in our driveway, walk by the house, or start to walk up the sidewalk, WELL before they ever would get to the door to push the doorbell.
If someone is coming over, we are usually opening the door for them before they ever get there, just from the phone alert.
Works great!
The picture is measuring the voltage, and one of the old small transformer and the new 16v 30va one.
Hope that helps.
