All I can tell you is the geek squad mounted it over my fireplace, so I wouldn't think they'd do that if it was a no-no.... Key is following your fireplace's guidelines about distance to your mantle... then the mantle kind of provides some protection from heat blowing up directly on the TV.

And I don't see why it cannot be mounted on a wall, even on a drywall, you must use an appropriate mounting hardware and there are lots of them available. Besides, there should be wall studs, usually 2x4's where you can secure the bracket.
