“Is the optical output always live? Meaning when plugged in, will the TV speakers work or do you have to switch it in and out through the menu? Thanks”

The settings are retained, however the optical output does not do the tv or soundbar much favor. If you can switch to the HDMI eARC and be amazed at the greatly improved quality.
