I found the manual for one sub-model (same model you cited but with "CTO" added to the end) and that manual indicates the NVME uses the PCI 3 x4 bus specification, which makes the Samsung SSD 980 a perfect match. I would be shocked if HP used motherboards with different PCI specs in the same model family, so PCI 3 x4 is a very good bet for your laptop. If you have access to your sub-model's maintenance and service guide you can double check the PCI spec. In the manual I found on the manufacturer's site the spec appears at the bottom of page 1, and reads like this:
"Solid-state drive:
●1-TB, 2280, PCIe-3×4, NVMe, solid-state drive with three-layer cell (TLC) DS"
I just purchased this drive to replace the drive on one of my desktops and the drive performs beautifully.
When you purchase, be sure to get the 980 and not the 980 Pro. The 980 Pro is compatible with your laptop, but it runs on the newer PCI 4.0 bus specification, so you'll be paying a lot of extra money for speed your computer can't realize.
