The Play 1s will play the rear sounds and function as a true surround sound experience. It is not the same sound as the sound bar. You can go into settings and change this for when you are listening to music however, and the system remembers based on the activity. So, for music all speakers play the same thing, but for movies and tv it functions as a traditional surround sound.
