I have iphone 12 and airplay2 works on mine for exactly what you are wanting to do. I ran into an issue where my external ROKU from my dead tv was "capturing" the cast. I unplugged it and worked after that. I only knew as I watched the iphone the whole time got the failure message when it finally timed out. I can't say I have resolved the problem, but the TV effectively replaces my ROKU anyway. Maybe regift it to my brother.

With Chromecast built-in, you can cast all your favorite movies, shows, apps, games and more directly to your TV. With Apple AirPlay, you can stream video and audio to your television right from your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Watch movies and shows from the Apple TV app, your favorite apps or even Safari.
