Depends on how much storage you put into it. The size does match up to the size for a laptop harddrive. It works fairly fast too.

In order to use this, you would need to buy a drive to put into it. Whatever size of drive you purchase - in addition to this enclosure case - will determine how much it would back up. Most external drives, that I am aware of, would work with a Dell Laptop once formatted properly. You would probably be best served by purchasing an external hard drive that is already in a case. Western Digital has an "Easystore" version and Seagate has a "Backup Plus" version. Both will fit in your hand easily, and contain everything you need to make it run. I have picked out a couple of 2 Terabyte drives that are currently on sale at Best Buy for around $65-$69. Two Terabytes can hold around 34,000 hours of mp3 music, or 80 days worth of videos, or 620,000 photos, and this is a great price for them right now.
