Q: QuestionWill these switches work with a receptacle? I have a switch that controls a rope light that is plugged into an outlet but the light switch controls it.

• A:Answer I don't see a reason why it wouldn't. A switch has no idea what type of device, be it a direct wired ceiling fixture or an outlet. it's supplying power to. All the switch is doing is controlling the flow of electricity - off or on. In essence, with a setup like this, you're turning the receptacle into a smart plug via the smart switch.

• A:Answer You can use a motion sensor to trigger this switch to turn on but you’ll need to setup a routine in Alexa or SmartThings (not sure which one you’re using). The same Philips Hue motion sensor would be compatible.

Q: QuestionCan this switch handle a 220v electric water heater? Would like remote management for a lake house only used occasionally. Appreciate your help with this.

• A:Answer Not directly. The switch is for 110v circuit and a max of 15amps. But, in an indirect way you might be able to do that. And you would probably need an electrician to do the work. You could use the switch to control a relay. If the electrician could install a relay that will be used to control the 220v circuit of the electric water heater, then the KASA switch could be used to turn the relay on and off. The relay itself would need to be one that is controlled by 110v and has the capability to control a 220v circuit. This might sound a bit obtuse to you, but hopefully it would make sense to an electrician.

• A:Answer Yes. But you'll have to be specific with the name of the light. For example, if you're in your bed room and want to turn off your foyer light, you'll have to say, "hey google, turn off foyer light". Let's say your Google hub was in your foyer and you assigned both the light and your hub in the foyer then all you would have to say is "hey Google, turn off the light" Hope that makes sense.

• A:Answer It needs a neutral wire. Most newer homes have neutral wires in the junction box. You will not see it attached to your old switch. The neutral wires are typically tucked further inside the junction box and twisted together with a wirenut on the end. Nuetral wires are white.

• A:Answer Yes a neutral wire is required. If you have a older home better check first. Most newer homes have neutral wire following the circuit to switch.

• A:Answer I know of no way to disable temporarily the wall switch such that a toddler can't push the toggle. However, because the smart switch is app-controllable, the actual physical switch does not have to be within toddler reach. One can install the switch in a separate, but still convenient, place. Depending on your skill level, it involves running a four-conductor Romex cable from the existing switch position to a new location that is out of reach of the toddler. A licensed electrician can do this for you, too.
