No, it will not duplicate if the file is in the same name. It will give you an option if you want to overwritten the file or keep both of the file.

Please try again later.If you copy the files you want to backup and paste them to your external drive it will ask you if you want to overwrite the previous ones with the new one. Just click yes and it will re-write the old file with the new one and you will have no duplicate copies. If you answer no then you will have multiple copies of the same file but with different dates, or you may have the same file with an added extension like 01, 02, 03 and so on.
