Will this work with a really old Mac Book, circa 2008? null

What OS system is your computer running? If it's at least on mountain lion it should be fine. Go to the apple icon in the corner- about this Mac and see what Operating system you are running. It also supports newer OS platforms like Yosemite and Mavericks. If it's not any of those google compatible drives with the OS you have. You may want to back it up on to one and then update your software.
