“Does it have a light to indicate the device is on and working?”

• It does not have a light but you can tell if it working by opening the device on the computer. No light has never ben a problem for me and I use it daily for backups. I love the product.

• No. It installs itself when you plug it in the first time. It'll show up on your "This PC" display if your computer recognizes it after it's done. Buy a longer cord unless using on a laptop.
