A single rca cable is all that is needed. I set my sub this way and it works perfectly.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My subwoofer is connected to the receiver with RCA plugs & the wire is dual similar to a large lamp cord. You can run two separate RCA cords if you like, but it's a bit cleaner with a dual wire cord. I'm using a Definitive Technology powered subwoofer for watching movies. I also have a passive M&K "Goliath" woofer that I use with a pair of Visonik David (front) Speakers for listening to music. I've got a 5.1 setup, and I'm very happy with the surround sound for DVD and Bluray movies. DVD and Bluray concert videos sound very good as well with my 5.1 setup. All of this is in my living room, and (in my case) a 7.1 system is really not compatible with how the furniture is arranged. If you've got a dedicated room for watching movies, then a 7.1 system is doable. A carpeted finished basement would be ideal for something like that. .
