I know that it will accept a 128 Gb memory stick. I don't know if it will accept input from an external hard drive, but provided you are using a USB 3 connector and the drive is externally powered I don't know why it wouldn't work. I have not tried this but it sounds like it should work, but if the manufacturer specifically says it won't work, I would go with what they say.
