Vast Improvement on Your Basic Electric Toothbrush
|Posted .My family is familiar with the Quip brand. But this will be the first one we’ve tried that works along with an App. We love this kid-friendly bright and cheerful yellow color. And the Quip was packaged awesomely. Although the ‘slip cover’ is part of the overall design and can be used as a stand, the plastic tube that the toothbrush comes in, could also be used as an extra secure travel case. Just an idea. I went ahead and mounted my Quip on the bathroom mirror with the attached sticky strip. I wanted to try this child’s size out for myself as my mouth tends to be a bit small (for an adult) and I prefer a particular size and shape of toothbrush. It worked well for my specific needs. I truly did feel a difference after a brushing cycle. My gums felt stimulated, and the surface of my teeth clean and smooth when running my tongue over them. As for how the Quip performed ... the vibration of the toothbrush in your hand wasn’t bothersome at all, as some of the traditional electric toothbrushes I’ve owned, have been. The matte texture of the rubberized plastic provides a good gripping surface. Plus, the back side of the brush head has a tongue cleaner, too, which is nice. The softness, texture, and material of the ‘bristles’ was quite pleasant. There are soft rubber outer bristles, and the usual type in the inner area, both designed to better clean your teeth and gums. One of the key features of the Quip toothbrushes, is timing how long you spend brushing in each of the four quadrants of your mouth - for every 30 seconds of brushing, a small vibration alerts you to move on to another. The app was under-whelming. While being a helpful tool to go along with the Quip Smart Toothbrush, you could still use it without just as well. The App has some basic info and tips. Seeing your daily activity and earning rewards are cool features, especially fun for the kids, at least at first, until the novelty wears off. Not meaning to sound negative here, just saying what would typically happen. And the price is right. Auto-shipment replacement heads and batteries are a great deal, too. Which makes it easy to switch out the brush heads when you should, every three months. The Quip line of Smart Electric Toothbrushes are great! Get one, or two, or ... however many, for the entire family. :)

Good Electric Toothbrush, But Poor App Performance
|Posted .My wife and I have always had a difficult time inspiring our son to brush his teeth. He is now old enough to brush on his own, but he often doesn't brush for the right amount of time. We have used YouTube videos to make brushing fun, but they can be distracting and he ends up spending his time singing, or simply forgets to brush thoroughly. With this Quip Kid's brush he's proud to have his own electric toothbrush (like mom and dad) and he knows how long to brush, and understands how much time he needs to devote to each area of his mouth (even when were are not monitoring the process). The problem is that our brush will not connect to the Mobile Application. I have worked with customer support, but after their limited troubleshooting could not solve the connection problems - we were told to simply wait until an new version of the App is available (and even then there is no guarantee that the brush will connect to the app). After further investigation, it doesn't appear as though the App is all that valuable. It will track how often the brush is used, but it doesn't seem to be able to show if the user brushed various parts of the mouth, etc. (as the brush does not have any accelerometer built in). The brush could cost less if the Bluetooth was not included. Quip could have simply posted their tips to YouTube and it would have had the same effect. I also have mixed feelings about the subscription model in place for the replacement heads. The subscription fee is fairly low, but I can't help but feel as though I am paying more to get less (than if I were to simply to buy a disposable toothbrush). Every 3 months Quip will deliver a brush head and a AAA battery - but I wish I could simply buy the brush heads all at once and avoid the subscription. The warranty is also dependent upon singing up for the subscription. The brush does work perfectly fine, and I like the innovation of a case that doubles as a toothbrush holder - but I don't feel as though this brush stands out from the many other electric toothbrushes that are available. I have no problem recommending the brush itself, but I don't feel as though the app will bring any worthwhile value.

Great Toothbrush!
|Posted .What a fun little toothbrush! The Quip toothbrush is a really nice little toothbrush for children, with a unique offer I haven’t seen anywhere else. In the box: You get the brush, included battery, and brush head cover that can also stick to your bathroom mirror. The entire thing is plastic, but feels sturdy and is a good size for a child’s mouth. Using the brush: It works just like any electric toothbrush. The vibration isn’t excessive so it should shake the toothpaste off or hurt your child’s mouth. It also provides pulses to tell you when you have brushed two minutes to help your child know they’ve brushed long enough. My only problem was the button on the brush is pretty hard to press, so it could be difficult for your child to do on their own. The app: The toothbrush comes with an app, because it’s 2020 and everything has an app. It’ll track how often you brush, if you brushed your top teeth more than the bottom, number of strokes, and acceleration. I’m not sure why you’d really need all this information, but if you’re the kind of person that likes to geek out over your brushing habits, here you go. It’ll connect with Apple and Google health to track with all your other health apps. It also features a reward system that will reward you with gift cards if you brush consistently. The service: The subscription service is what makes Quip unique. You can subscribe to their service every three months for a new brush head and battery; brush, battery, and toothpaste; or for brush, battery, toothpaste, and floss refill. I think it’s pretty cool to not have to worry about getting a new toothbrush and the price isn’t bad for a brush head. Overall it’s a quality electric toothbrush and if you’re the kind of person that like subscribing to services that eliminate things like buying toothbrushes, this might be something for you.

It's an ok toothbrush
|Posted .So the toothbrush itself works pretty well. It is a good size for my daughter’s mouth and the 2 min. timer is split up into 4 parts with a pretty distinct and relatively long pause when you compare to an adult’s toothbrush. This is nice because she never misses the signal and it gives her time to move to the next part of her mouth with it off so that if she opens her mouth a little bit it doesn’t splatter as much toothpaste all over her mirror. It also runs on standard batteries. This may not be as economically friendly, but it makes it easier to store away since you don’t need to worry about having space next to a plug, and if you’re traveling and need to change a battery you don’t have any issues, where if you forgot to bring your charger on vacation you could just have a manual toothbrush with a rechargeable type. I can’t really review the smart functions because I could never get it to work. I got the app downloaded to both my wife and my phones but every time I try to sink it says its attached but it needs a firmware update first. It seems to be updating ok, but after a min or so it gives me an error logs out and won’t show the toothbrush in the app. This has been going on for almost a week now and no success, so now we basically have a non-smart brush. They also try very hard for you to join their subscription program to replace your head and battery. The pricing is high, but not outrageous. Overall its an ok brush, but if they’re advertising it’s a smart toothbrush, you really need to make sure that part works.

Good travel toothbrush, but not for everyday
|Posted .THE GOOD -Reasonable price, both base unit and refill -Uses AAA battery -Earn real-world rewards through mobile app -Nifty mirror mount also doubles as storage case -Small size: easy to travel and takes less counter space THE BAD -"Rumble Pak" effect -Wide, uncomfortable neck -Only one brush head size and one cleaning mode -Mobile app issues -Only one color -Can't get refills w/o battery I can appreciate what Quip is trying to do, making electric toothbrushes more affordable and available. Not everyone wants to ( or can afford to ) drop $150+ on a toothbrush, then pay for expensive replacement heads all year. Quip's business model is very similar to the subscription razor services you may already be using. However, the quality of shave I get from the cheap subscription razors is almost indistinguishable from the more expensive retail brands. I can't say the same for the Quip. I tried the Quip for a bit before disinfecting it and handing it over to my kids. It reminds me of the N64 Rumble Pak. There's no special internal frame or driveshaft to directly actuate the brush head like you find on a Sonicare or Oral-B. It just has a vibrating motor in the handle that rumbles the entire toothbrush. Instead of just moving the brush head along my teeth and letting the pulses do the cleaning, I felt I still had to manually brush with the Quip to get my teeth feeling clean. It does have an internal timer and will buzz every 30 seconds to remind you to change which area of your teeth you're brushing, but that's pretty standard nowadays. Quip makes a big deal in their marketing how much smaller their kid's model is compared to competing models, which is true in total size. However the neck on the Quip is just as thick, front to back, as normal toothbrushes and also much wider side to side. Even for an adult, it's not comfortable moving around in your mouth, especially if you normally try to seal your lips around the toothbrush to keep spit from dribbling down your chin as you brush. The toothbrush comes with a well designed travel case / protective cap that snaps over the top of the brush. At home, the slip case can be removed and used as a caddy to stick the toothbrush to a mirror or other slick surface. It uses a special gel that's not sticky ( so it won't pick up lint or dirt in your travel bag ) but that will still adhere to glass or slick metal surfaces ( like a vinyl decal for windows ). You can pull it off your mirror and restick it time and again without problem. This model is equipped with Bluetooth ( you can also get a normal BT-less kid's toothbrush ) which allows it to work with an application on your Android or iOS device. It can track time spent brushing and will give real-world rewards for consistent brushing. Connectivity with the app can be very problematic at this point though. When it does work, well my kids think anything on a phone screen is cool, and that can be useful in motivating them to brush their teeth. However, it's only available in yellow, which can be problematic if three kids each have identical looking toothbrushes. A Sharpie would probably be necessary to differentiate them. A big part of the Quip is the refill subscription plan. You buy the base toothbrush package then you can pay for a recurring subscription plan that will send you replacement brush heads and batteries ( it uses a regular AAA ) every three months ( along with things like floss and toothpaste if you want to pay extra for them ). The subscription prices are pretty reasonable for what you get. However I can't find an option to get only brush heads and not replacement batteries as well. It's nice the Quip uses a regular AAA battery, but I'd much rather use my own rechargeable battery than pay for a new battery that needs to be thrown away every three months. Seems wasteful. Perhaps the biggest problem is how basic everything is. Quip only offers one kind of brush head ( in adult and kid sizes ), one cleaning mode, and that's it. It works okay for the most part, and it is cheaper than most other electric toothbrushes ( even factoring in a subscription plan and replacement brush heads ). But it's about the same price as entry models from competing retail brands. And if you go up just a little in price, you can get toothbrushes that offer a lot more features, so long as you don't absolutely need a Bluetooth companion app on your phone. I don't use a mobile app for my own toothbrush, and apart from being able to check if my kids really brushed their teeth or not, I don't see the need for one. Do I find the Quip Kids toothbrush worthwhile? Not really. The times I used it, it didn't get my teeth feeling as clean as my regular Sonicare toothbrush. My kids don't seem to notice any difference between it and their cheap $5 disposable Spinbrushes either. I find the brush head and especially neck very large and wide considering it's intended for kids and those with small mouths. The Bluetooth and app link can be helpful in motivating kids to brush their teeth, including the points and rewards you can earn, but there are all sorts of free apps already available that can do that which don't require a more expensive toothebrush and subscription plan. I think the cheaper non-Bluetooth model would make a good travel brush, since it comes with the travel cap / mirror mount, especially for someone who doesn't want to pack their larger and more expensive electric toothbrush.

Bristles are large for kids' teeth; app needs work
|Posted .I'm not entirely sure the rubber bristles are good for anybody's teeth, honestly (disclaimer: I'm nowhere near the dental profession) as they're very large so I don't believe they adequately clean *in between* the teeth, especially for children. The app itself was impossible to setup on my wife's iPhone 11, but I successfully got it sync'd to my Android after some troubleshooting. I was quite surprised, however, to find there were "brushings" logged on the brush from *months* before we received it. Not sure if this means it had powered on in transit, was powered on & tested (without being reset) at the factory, or what. But it felt weird. When you "sync" the toothbrush w/ the app after a brushing, it updates the data but then often pops an "unable to sync" message... despite just updating the data w/ the latest stuff (so clearly it sync'd just fine). It tracks things like duration, coverage (top/bottom), strokes, and "intensity". Upon digging into the meaning of "strokes" and "intensity" - they seem duplicative. Additionally all this data is still in "beta", but it has helped me direct my 6yo to split his time between top & bottom parts of his mouth, which is good! We haven't yet earned enough points to redeem for a reward to see how that process goes, but things like a tote bag, "refresh bag", floss, credits toward refills, and even a $5 Target gift card are available today.
