    Synopsis

    Red Dragon
Following the phenomenal success of The Silence Of The Lambs and Hannibal, Anthony Hopkins returns as brilliant madman Hannibal Lecter in this thriller based on the novel in which author Thomas Harris introduced the character. Will Graham (Edward Norton) is an FBI agent with a rare gift for tracking serial killers who brought Hannibal Lecter to justice; however, his confrontation with Lecter proved to be a bloody, near-death experience, and afterward Graham retired from the Bureau, moving to Florida to spend his time with his wife, Molly (Mary-Louise Parker), and their son. However, a particularly grisly killer is on the loose, and Jack Crawford (Harvey Keitel), Graham's one-time mentor at the Bureau, asks him to return to duty to find him. The "Tooth Fairy" is a vicious murderer who kills entire families at once, covering the eyes of his victims with bits of a shattered mirror. Graham finds he needs help putting together the pieces of the "Tooth Fairy" case, and he calls upon Lecter looking for advice. Lecter, at once vaguely helpful and self-serving, as usual, offers scraps of information to Graham which help him zero in on the killer. But Lecter knows more than he's telling; the "Tooth Fairy" is actually Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes), a troubled and withdrawn man who admires Lecter's violent panache and corresponds with him. Dolarhyde works at a film processing lab, where one of his co-workers, a blind woman named Reba McClane (Emily Watson), seems to be quite attracted to him. As Dolarhyde wrestles with both his murderous impulses and his feelings for McClane, Lecter plays Graham and Dolarhyde against one another so that, as the FBI agent comes closer to catching "the Tooth Fairy," Dolarhyde moves in on his next victim -- Graham's family. Red Dragon marked the second time Harris' novel of the same name had been brought to the screen; five years prior to The Silence Of The Lambs, Michael Mann adapted the book for the screen as Manhunter, which starred William Petersen as Graham and Brian Cox as Lecter. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is an amazing film, my wife and I love it! This is actually a remake of the 1986 film Manhunter, which was based off of Thomas Harris's book Red Dragon. I actually watched Red Dragon first, then later found out about Manhunter. I'm sure Manhunter was good for it's time, but watching it after Red Dragon, it's not nearly as good. The script is almost identical, but Red Dragon has much better acting, and is more fast paced and intense. If you're a fan of Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal as we are, you'll love this installment of the series. Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, and Ralph Fiennes were all terrific in this film. I highly recommend it! Also, I recommend Hannibal Rising, see how it all begins.

The Blu-ray provided an excellent picture and sound. This movie shows how F.B.I. Agent Graham captures the serial killer Hannibal the Cannibal. The movie then moves forward in time where another serial killer known as "The Tooth Fairy" is killing entire families when he strikes. The F.B.I. asks Graham for help on this case and he agrees to assist. The story is well written and well acted. Red Dragon precedes The Silence of the Lambs and comes close to being just as entertaining.

I recommend watching this film of the silence of the lambs saga because it gives the story line before Hannibal meets Clarice Starling. It shows you how he ended up in prison and the detective that Edward Norton plays helps you to understand a little more background. So it's the story before silence of the lambs in sequence. However, the character of the red dragon wasn't so great. I definitely feel they could have went further with the storyline.

Recently watched this DVD and was surprised by the competency of the direction. Convincing performances -- particularly by Ralph Fiennes -- and a decent (if predictable) story. Perhaps not as good as Michael Mann's "Manhunter", but definitely superior to Ridley Scott's "Hannibal".

This movie is a good remake to have in the collection. Sure I own Manhunter which is better, but now I have the consistency in story with Anthony Hopkins.

Yes, the legend Mr. Hopkins returns! I loved it, and Anthony still thrilled me per usual with his brilliant portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
