Like the lightweight product. Good exterior design. However I wish it could give option of carrying Win10 instead of Win11. Experienced tons of unexpected and unwanted restarts. My win10 laptop never had such problem

Great computer. It is fast and the screen is beautiful. The bottom does get hot when it is running so I would recommend a cooling base with the purchase.

SUMMARY: A spec bump of the totally redesigned 2024 version, the 2025 ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G16 OLED 240Hz Laptop still should come with a warning, testing at the store can be extremely dangerous for your credit card. It’s light, sturdy, relatively quiet, great audio and a screen that is top of its class. It’s a slick looking gaming computer with broad appeal that can be used as a daily driver in all situations. The closest I have come to having my cake and eat it too.
PROs (almost too many to list):
- Built for speed, fast CPU, fast GPU, fast RAM, fast SSD, fast WIFI. Reasonable cooling. Enough good things cannot be said about the screen. I haven’t seen a better laptop one. Specs below.
- All that in a thin (0.59 inches) light (4.1 lbs) stylish (burnished gray aluminum) package that is study, very portable and won’t embarrass you.
- A 2.5 GHz Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor series 2 (24MB Cache, up to 5.1 GHz, 16 cores, 22 Threads) with Intel AI NPU.
- High Resolution 16 inch OLED screen, 2560x1600. Not 4k, but very crisp and clean.
- Extreme Contrast OLED (yes going to keep repeating that) 1,000,000 :1. You won’t believe the blacks.
- G-SYNC Support with an insanely fast 0.2ms response time.
- 16:10 aspect ratio, great for games, good for movies.
- Dolby Vision HDR, Pantone validated, 100% DCI-P3.
- 240 Hz Screen refresh rate. Unbelievable smooth graphics.
- NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070 Laptop GPU, 8GB GDDR7 on board.
- Amazing Dolby Atmos sound with a 4-speaker woofer enhanced system with two tweeters. Impressive.
- Quality build, sturdy aluminum casing with a solid keyboard and wide trackpad. The screen is thin but doesn’t wiggle too much. No flex in the keyboard.
- 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. You can upgrade at your leisure to an additional second SSD, though it’s a tight fit with not much room for a heat sink.
- Fast LPDDR5X ram at 7467 megahertz (but at 16 gb maybe not enough for you?)
- Wi-Fi 7
- All the ports and more, audio jack, 2.1 HDMI, 1 thunderbolt 4 port, 1 USB-C 4, 1 usb C 3.2 (act as charging ports), 2 USB A, a display port, and UHS-II card reader.
- A decent 1080p FHD webcam.
- 3 microphone array with noise cancellation.
CONs:
- 16 gb soldered on ram, meaning what you see is what you get. No upgrade possible after purchase. I can’t say it slowed my games down, but I was careful to make sure everything else was closed before playing and you won’t be multitasking Adobe Premiere at the same time.
- Air cooling, a reasonable compromise given the slim size, but it does result in some thermal throttling in intense action. The games did not stutter though.
A MATTER OF TASTE:
- Windows 11 Home edition. Fairly standard for new laptops but you might want to upgrade.
- RGB keyboard.
- Be careful to not block the heat exhaust ports on the bottom/back. You will want this on a flat solid surface, not your lap.
- Some might be dreaming for the ultra-quiet gaming machine so as to game with pristine gunfire sounds. Keep dreaming, but I find the fan noise to be acceptable. You will notice it, but you won’t think an aircraft is landing (yes I am looking at you Alienware). There is in fact an ultra-quiet mode but it slows down the computer by thermal throttling and that’s not what we buy gaming computers for.
- Not a fingerprint magnet, but its dark gray, some will show up.
- Not a touch screen. That might be hazardous to the computer while gaming anyway.
- Max brightness of 500 cd/m2. You won’t be using this outdoors.
- Reasonable battery life, you won’t find better on a gaming machine, but obviously less than you might want. I would get 5 hours down to 2 depending on how hard I pushed it
- Lacks an ethernet jack.
- Lacks a number keypad
REVIEW: This is an easy gaming laptop to review, long list of pros only one major con (and one other to be expected). If you can live with only 16 gb RAM soldered on so you can’t upgrade after purchase, you will likely love the ASUS G16. Alas ASUS is following Apple’s pricing strategy, if you want a more rounded 32 gb RAM, you must pay $400 additional at time of purchase.
Enough of that, what the specs don’t tell you is how intelligently this laptop is put together. It’s solid, with well-placed ports for maximum flexibility. You won’t find a better laptop screen and it’s likely to spoil you for any other screens you work with. Your friends will be jealous. Super dark HDR and buttery smooth at 240 hz. It was bright enough for indoors. That’s one of the reasons I really, really like this machine because not only is it a smooth slick piece of gaming machine, but I can also use it as my main driver (work and home). The Asus G16 is a premium build with an all-aluminum chassis is both light and stiff. No flexing keyboard or bouncy screen here. The keyboard is easy to type on (like this review) and the trackpad a delight to use. There are people that will be disappointed by the lack of a vapor chamber for cooling, going instead with traditional heat pipes and three fans, but it did the job. It could be noisy, and had a distinct tone different than others, but I quickly got used to it. It would thermally throttle under really heavy action but that was rare and did not really affect game play much. The excellent speakers helped while playing games.
GAMING PERFORMANCE: Legacy games were never so fast (looking at you almost anything from Blizzard), and it gave me more than 60 FFS with high to ultra settings on even Starfield, Battlefield 2042, Subnautica, New World Aeternum, Shadows of the Tomb Raider, and the Forest. And the colors? Really blow me away. The 5070 is a laptop graphics card but it performs well. No disappointments here. It kept up with every game I threw at it, making this review a long time to write with very frequent breaks. It’s just that fun. But you will want to run with the power adapter, even USB C charging was too slow when the discrete graphics and turbo CPU mode were engaged. You can imagine, what that does to battery time (about 2 hours when maxed out for games for me).
Finally, what’s great FPS if you can’t hear the wet sounds of monsters blowing up and guts and gore plopping down around you? For a computer its size, with two tweeters and two woofers, it has decent sound. Definitely loud enough to fill a room and maybe even annoy neighbors. Speaking of loud, some reviews criticize fan noise. Well, you are only going to get great performance with great thermals and for laptops, that’s fans. Me personally, I never found it to be distracting, but I tend to be tolerant of such. I could hear them in a silent room when I wasn’t yelling at enemies. But if you wear headphones, no problem.
EVERYTHING ELSE A COMPUTER IS FOR: It’s a great gaming computer, but ‘what about everything else?’ is a legitimate question. As mentioned, the build was solid and fit well in my backpack with little worries. It’s easy to type on. Peripherals were easy to attach. I didn’t find the lack of TB5 to be a problem, USB C is fast enough. I loaded up some real-life applications, the complete Microsoft Office and Photoshop. The battery was fine, I never got the 10 hours mentioned in marketing but then I never run in ultra-silent mode with a dark screen. In real world business use I would get 6-7 hours, long enough for crossing the country by plane. In this mode, USB-C charging was fine, I didn’t need to carry the included power brick. And the battery was fine for a few hours of nighttime game playing. So in short, a great computer to take traveling.
WHO IS THIS FOR? With its sleek design, amazing screen technology, and great gaming performance, the G16 remains in a class of its own. And it even performs for more ordinary tasks when you have to work to pay the bills. It plays well with peripherals expanding its usefulness. The construction is rugged enough to throw in a back pack and carry around, and the appearance is slick enough to pull out anywhere, so really it’s for anyone that wants a great portable gaming machine that can also be a daily driver. One caveat, if you own the 2204 version there probably isn’t enough here to upgrade for.
