Refurb was NOT Refurbished - just returned

I bought an Apple Airport Extreme, certified refurbished. Thought I was getting a great deal. It arrived... plain in box, no apple packaging, no instructions, nothing. Just the AE, in the box, with the power cord. Fine, I thought, maybe the previous owner threw all that out. So I plugged it in, downloaded instructions on my phone and tried to work through installation. When I got my computer to recognize it, it came up as "Kelli's Airport Extreme" and asked for a password. My name is not Kelli and I hadn't set up a network yet. So, this immediately tells me that this is not refurbished, it's returned. Still trying to keep an open mind, I googled a little and discovered other people who had purchased used items and recommended doing a factory re-set. I did that and tried to get going. I eventually called my ISP and tried to work with them on it (for TWO HOURS) and still nothing. I can connect directly via my modem, but as soon as I go through the Airport Extreme it's touch and go. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So basically, someone else returned this, probably for the same reason, and they just re-sold this as a refurb. This is ridiculous. Oh, and the best part... I did try to call the 800# for the Geek Squad since there was a card for that in the box and even though this is supposed to be an item they refurbished, they would provide NO support. They basically told me to call Apple. (Or I could purchase a service package for Geek Squad.) Seriously? Bottom line: don't buy a Best Buy refurb.

Outstanding deal that works well with mac os. Replaced time warner furnished router. The big advantage is the ability to utilize the 5hz wifi band -- faster signal and you are able to see more features on web sites.

Bought this refurbished by Geek Squad. Works like a charm, just a few scuffs and scratches (to be expected with a refurbished item, doesn't effect router working at all).

    Not "Refurbished"...Just Returned and Shipped

Let me begin by saying that the actual Airport Extreme is an AMAZING router! It is very simple to setup and supports mesh WiFi so your whole house can be covered using 2-3 of these. My low rating is actually based upon the "Geek Squad Certified Refurbished" part of the product. Upon receiving the product, I was confused as to what "Certified Refurbished" was supposed to mean or stand for. The normally pristine white box that it is packed in was dented and dirty. There was only one sticker saying "Geek Squad Certified Refurbished" holding the bottom from falling out. Thankfully, the router had been reset before arriving to me.

Looks and works like brand new. Typical quality that you'd expect from an airport.

    "Geek Squad Certified Refurbished"? Hardly...

Not sure what Best Buy means by refurbished. When purchasing a refurbished item directly from Apple, it's typically in outstanding condition, often like new. So I figured I would give Best Buy's version of refurbished a try, since the price was right. The Airport Extreme was packaged well enough, but my first impression was "geez, you guys couldn't even wipe the thing off?" The fingerprints, grease, and smudges on the casing of the Airport Extreme were so bad, that I immediately questioned if it had even been looked at in the first place, or tested for that matter. The least ANY company can do when they refurbish a product is to just wipe it off. They didn't even do that, the bare minimum of effort. So without even connecting it to my network, I chose to just return it. Wasn't worth the trouble if Best Buy wasn't even going to spend the time testing it or even cleaning it. Pretty bad experience with this BB GS refurbished product, and I'll likely not make the same mistake again. But I gave it a shot. I'll stick with refurbished items directly from Apple.

Well this doesn't work at all...

I could write a longer review but it looks like several people have done that already. I am tech savvy and I have actually bought refurbed Apple products before with no trouble. This however, quite literally, did nothing. It powers on but after attempts with three separate devices, iPhone, MacBook, Mac Mini... nada. It simply isn't discoverable. No amount of resets helped, hard wiring to try to acces via direct connect... nothing. Packing it up and now driving to the store. Which is one of the things I was avoiding by buying online. Sigh.

It's NOT refurbished, the item in box is a used one with lots of scratch and smudge! No original box, no manual ! Then I plug the power try too set up, it's not working!!!! My Mac and iPhone can not find the device. I tried to call best buy and they transfer me to the Geek Squad, the customer service person said they don't support it ! She let me bring that to the store. And I really heard she said the F words when she hang up the phone! What a Geek! Finally I go to the store return it and purchased a new one.

Stay away from Best Buy Refurb

I bought this thinking Best Buy must have some sort of refurb program to ensure a quality product. Big mistake. These items are NOT refurbed. They are simply returns. Mine was acting flaky after a few weeks. Since I didn't buy the extended warranty, customer service said I was outside the 15 day return. After spending an hour on the phone getting transferred multiple times, I eventually was hung up on. I ended up stuck with a broken product and no support. I not only will refrain from Best Buy refurb. They have lost all my business.

My router started malfunctioning in the 4th month and unfortunately there is no coverage beyond 90 days. I did not realize the limited coverage after the fact. Please beware.

Sent 2 bad Geek Squad Certified routers

First one had a bad wan port. It could not recognize the cable. Tried several cables. How is that missed? Second one kept dropping the wired connection. I returned both and went back to my old router, which works fine. My lack of faith in the Geek Squad has been confirmed.
