Best buy was the only company that had the best deal around for the current technology of laptop computers. I bought an i3 Asus laptop for the bargain price of $250 with free shipping. A deal that cannot be found anywhere.

I got this on special for $250, for that price it was by far the best deal for an iCore 3 that I could find. Yes it's a previous gen iCore but the difference between this gen and the next one for the icore 3 was negligable.
At the price point I paid nearly all Laptops are celeron/pentium or AMD. So can't complain it was a deal.
As to the product, this is a low end product, it will be interesting to see how it holds up over time but out of the gate it seems reasonable. Yes it's case and other thing a are clearly cheaper made than other machines but are on par with most entry level machines.
The one thing to just be aware of this Machine ships with windows 8 not 8.1 you will need to invest some time to upgrade it when you get it.

Got this on Black Friday sale under $300 out the door.. Replaced HDD with SSD, noticeably quicker. Replaced generic wifi card with Intel 7260 card, now I get much better network performance. Good for internet browsing, skype/hangouts. office apps work, some picture editing, that's pretty much it that i3 can take.
Pros: Good quality build; great price; i3; 4gb ram
Cons: ram soldered onto mb, can't upgrade
Overall great little budget laptop for light to slightly moderate usage...

I bought 2 of these laptops for my kids as Christmas presents for school. My kids love them. I was lucky to get these Intel i3 laptops when they were on sale for $249.99 each.
The performance of the laptop is very goof for the kids using them for school work, streaming Netflix, internet stuff, etc. Other reviewers have noted problems with the mouse and keypad functions. After more than 6 weeks of use, no problems experienced with either laptop. The laptops are light weight and easy to move around. All the hardware in them works well and as expected.
The only reason I did not give the laptops 5 stars was because I did a reformat of the hard drives and a clean install of Windows 8.1 (Windows 8.0 and a lot of junk ware comes pre-installed). It was a major pain and very time consuming to reload more current drivers and do the fresh OS install. Asus makes it quite difficult to reinstall desired software which existed on the computer prior to reformatting the drive. I recommend executing a backup of the factory installation just after running the laptop for the first time. It will make the job of a fresh OS install along with installing useful software that came with the laptop much easier. I miss the days when computer manufacturers would provide a CD or DVD containing installation exes of the software that comes pre-installed on their computers so that the software and drivers could easily be reinstalled in the event a reformat of the hard drive should become necessary or desired.

I'm very glad to have made this purchase. I work at home a great deal and need to have a computer for office docs and cloud access. This pc was a great price and has a DVD drive which is a bonus. The processor is highly recommended by my IT consultant. I often have many tabs and Office 365 opened simultaneously with no lag. The only drawback is I can't see when the caps lock is on.

I bought this Asus to replace my 3 year old HP laptop that is constantly overheated. I picked this up a week before black Friday 2014 for $250. This is a real bargain for a laptop with i3 core processor. This laptop and quite fast and the screen is very clear and bright. The keyboard feels a little bit flimsy, but other than that, this laptop has met my need for just surfing internet and e-mail.

Bought this for $250 during Thanksgiving sale. For the price it can't be beat - i3/HD4000 is a significant step up from the Celerons available in the same price range. Dumped Windows and installed Ubuntu + OSX - both run very well on the machine, though of course the OSX install is a challenge (Asus BIOS won't see legacy bootloader on the HD, so you have to come to grips with Clover; installed wifi card won't work with OSX, but can be replaced easily with a $10 DW1510), and there is a small hoop to jump through to enable Wifi on Ubuntu.
The keyboard is pretty awful - inclusion of numeric keypad may be a plus for some, but for me it is well and truly in the way. Best for smaller fingers I guess. Trackpad is also not the best - two-finger right-click is not reliable.
Would love a higher res screen, but at this price I can't complain.

My overall transaction was smooth. Ordered this laptop online and scheduled for store pickup. I am mostly satisfied with my purchase other than the battery life. I have to keep the laptop plugged in at all times or it will die after it seems like 30 mins. I purchased this with tax included for $262.00. Very good price for the quality :-/

My Dell crapped out right when I needed it most, and I had no time to deal with it. Ran to Best Buy and picked up this "temporary" replacement "extra" travel laptop. It's not the fastest, but it's serving it's purpose. Adequate for web, small documents, etc. Have been able to stream Hulu, Amazon, Netflix movies to TV via HDMI. Amazon player took a while to load. Made of cheap feeling and looking plastic, but as a result is much lighter than my Dell, which has been a blessing for travel. Wish it had a touch screen - next time!

Overall I am pleased with this laptop for the following reason:
PRO:
1. The intel i3 processor offers good performance for most tasks i.e. Web browsing, Office functions - MS Word, Excell, watching video's.
2. The screen size allows easy viewing of applications and movies
3. The HMDI port allows you to connect your laptop to flat screen TV (or Monitor) to watch DVD movies utilizing the built in DVD reader.
Con:
There are a few improvements that would make this an outstanding Laptop.
1. The touch pad along with Windows 8 (or 8.1) is a pain to use. Recommend you buy a wireless mouse - (this will eat up one of your usb ports, leaving only one port to connect to your memory sticks, printer, phone, etc). Needs at least 3 usb ports.
2. This laptop comes with Windows 8; you need to down load and install Windows 8.1 which can take an hour or more depending on your internet speed. Note Windows 8.1 is far easier to use than Windows 8 and is free from Microsoft.
3. The laptop comes with a lot of pre-installed software, a number of which are trial versions.
4. Note one of the first tasks you will need to do is install all of the latest update - over a hundred, this takes hours of time

I looked at multiple laptops and the Asus X551CA proved to be the one for me. From checking emails, web surfing and going to my favorite sites, this laptop is all that I need. Easy to set up and easy to use. For the price this laptop is by far the one I would recommend. Very senior friendly and affordable.

I bought this computer to replace a laptop that died for the kids to use. It replaced a core 2 duo machine that cost 4 times as much and could only function in much less the capacity. After buying, I cloned the hard drive to a SSD and made the switch. Now this computer really is quite fast. Keep in mind that for 250 plus a SSD I already had, I have a machine that cant be matched for the price. Before the SSD, it was really slow at doing windows update and even turning on, but wow what a difference. The shell of the computer is made from cheap plastic, but what do you expect and it isn't made with upgrading in mind. The RAM is not upgradeable, the battery is dismal at best logging in at about 2.5 hours for web browsing. The screen has great clarity for what it is used for. Windows 8 sucks in my opinion, but it does get the job done. All that being said, it was well worth the price I paid that will only get you a celeron processor in most laptops, so only time will tell if it holds up. So far a month later it is still like a brand new computer.

A good value when on-sale. Exemplifies "you get what you pay for". A basic 15.6" 1366x768 TFT screen, an older Intel Core i3-3217u CPU with 3mb L3 cache underclocked to run 1.8 ghz (to save power - but see more below), only 4mb non-expandable RAM (soldered - no exp. slots), 1.0mp webcam, 802.11n wifi limited to 2.4ghz (no 5ghz), 500gb Hitachi HDD - 5400RPM 6gb cache, no LED's for HDD, NumLock, CapsLock, only 2USB (1-2.0, 1-3.0). Short Battery Run Time!! Preloaded with Win 8.0 - allocate the full day to fully patch 8.0 then upgrade to 8.1. Overall, a good value for a basic laptop with a decent CPU and OK features. Lightweight, compact, competent performance, but don't plan long excursions from A/C power... expect about 2 hours run-time on battery.

Good performance for the price. Battery leaves something to be desired. It only seems to last 2-3 hours with light to average use. My daughters tend to keep their laptops plugged in a lot of the time so they are happy with the laptop. If you are mostly using this while plugged in and don't need to be unplugged for over a couple hours at a time, I would say it is a good value.

I actually am on my second one due to the first one I purchased having some serious issues - maybe it got bumped around in transit. But it was running really slow just on the computer programs alone. I had only had it for two weeks when it started slowing down and I had not put anything but Office 365 on it. So I took it back and exchanged it for the same one. Even after the exchange it still was not what I was expecting, but I purchased it because it was on pre-black Friday sale for only $250 and for that price I think it is pretty fair. If I had paid it's full price, I would be very disappointed with it's performance. I don't like that I can hear the drive make a click noise whenever I bring it out of sleep mode and that may just be due to a past experience when my last laptop died on me and the drive was making a louder clicking noise, so it just makes me nervous. I hope this helps.
