Bought this Wifi adapter for a Desktop PC build I set up in the living room for playing PC games on my HDTV. This device worked okay for about a few days successfully connecting to my 802.11ac wireless internet via my Fiber Internet through AT&T. About a week using this device, I decided to check out some Youtube videos on this PC and noticed Youtube was giving me low 480p resolution, so I'd change the resolution to 1080p, when I do this the video began buffering every 2 seconds and was barely able to load the rest of the Youtube page. I checked the wireless connection status and looked at the Properties of my access point the PC was connected to and I found it connecting to only my 2.4GHz band and not the 5GHz band that it initially connected with the first week I set it up. I tried reinstalling the drivers (which I didn't need to initially install because Windows 10 already had the driver) downloading the driver from ASUS website, did not fix the problem nor changed the driver (it is likely the same driver Win10 had on file). Attempted to force 802.11a/c or 802.11a/c/n on the Wireless Adapter in Configure on the Properties page, where it defaults to Auto. When I changed this, it then would not show my access point at all. Next I then went into my AT&T Router modem and disabled the 2.4GHz band, only allowing the 5GHz broadcast. After that my access point still was not showing up. Confirming my belief that Somehow the 5GHz band on this little ASUS USB wifi adapter stopped functioning at all. Only the 2.4GHz band it will see my access point and it is very poor quality on that band. Using my Dell laptop (of 2015) I could connect no problem to my 802.11ac connection, it was in fact on the 5GHz band the entire time, and it was sitting right next to my Desktop in the living room. Do not buy this adapter. I just returned this to Best Buy today getting my refund. I looked at other USB Wifi adapters and they all seem to have some issues according to user reviews. In hindsight I realize the USB Wifi is a poor convenience solution. Way back in the day I bought a 802.11g Wifi adapter that was a PCI card and I initially had no issues with that and eventually gave it away. I should have stuck to buying those type of Wifi adapters. Today there are plenty of PCIe 1x style Wifi adapters, and these are what we should be buying, especially if you have a desktop PC. Ordered me Gigabyte's latest PCIe Wifi card.

DECEPTIVE LABELING - USB 2.0 limits actual speed

I had been eyeing this USB AC1200 adapter online for some time, noting the low price. Having a gig speed internet connection, I had viewed this as a potential replacement for my laptop's built in AC600 adapter that could unleash more of my available wifi bandwidth. I happened to walk by this in store today, and thought I'd give it a try. Only upon taking it out of the box did I take a closer look at the specifications on the back of the box. I noticed that the interface was USB2.0 which immediately concerned me. The front and sides of the box indicated AC1200 which has a maximum speed of 867 mbps on the 5ghz band. USB 2.0 on the other hand has a theoretical maximum speed of about 480 mbps. Nonetheless, having already been duped into purchasing, I figured I'd try it out on my USB 3.0 port and see if it surprised me... it did not. First off, the range on this thing is horrible. I first tried it out approximately 20 feet away from my wifi router. I connected the device to my 5ghz wifi and viewed the device status and it indicated a connection of 500-600 mbps. I proceeded to do a speed test and got a miserable 40mbps download speed. I then moved into the same room as my router and checked the device status again as I moved closer/further away from the router. About 10 feet seems to be the point when it drops off from an alleged 867 mbps connection to 700 mbps. Even when I was close enough to connect at maximum speed, I could not get a speed test result above 160-170 mbps using multiple websites. At this point, I disconnected the device and reactivated my built in AC600 adapter. I viewed the device status which indicated it was connected at 433 mbps, the expected maximum for this device. I performed the speed test from the exact same spot as before and achieved results as high as 210 mbps... I should have looked closer at the box, but seeing it labeled as a 867mbps device kind of made me assume it was also a usb3.0 device that was capable of achieving these speeds. DON'T BE DECEIVED!

I needed a wireless WiFi USB adapter for my office computer. I have moved to another office and the hard wired cable didn't reach, so my IT guy told me to get one of these devices. I don't know a lot about these devices, so I figure the newest version should help me stay operational for the longest time. I know that technology becomes obsolete so fast, so getting the newest version makes the most sense, as long as the price is reasonable. This device is an AC1200 (they also had an AC600) and it's 802.11 AC. 2.4GHz + 5 GHz some were only 2.4, so I thought it would be better to get a 5 also. MU-MIMO support too - I don't know what this means, but the others had the same spec. It also came with a tiny CD for installation, which worked like a charm. How does it operate? My IT guy said it works fine. He didn't give me a thumbs up or down on this model, so my guess is that he's okay with it. When he's impressed with something, he lets me know - I bought some sort of high tech computer and he was impressed. Though he wasn't too impressed with the cheapo speakers I installed. Overall, no complaints, so it does what it's suppose to do. I don't notice and speed issues and it hasn't dropped the connection yet, so things are good. I've had it for almost a week, so time will tell, but I've had Asus products in the past and they've worked fine. I give it a 5 star rating, because it did what it's suppose to do without any hassles and no trouble installing it. No extra software to install either. Plus, the cost was very reasonable, though the packaging is on the cheap side, but maybe that's what keeps the cost down, so no big complaints either. I highly recommend this device.

My daughters HP laptop could never get the network speeds that our other devices could; not even when sitting 3 feet from the router. After some investigation I discovered her laptop was only using the 2.4GHz channels and totally ignoring the 5GHz channels. That seemed a little odd given her laptop is roughly the same age as mine and my laptop's built in WiFi works on both channels. After doing some research I chose this little USB adapter as a way to get her both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz access. All we had to do was pull down the drivers before we plugged it in, install them and then insert the adapter. We disabled her built in WiFi and she was immediately seeing MUCH faster speeds. We can now play online together and she sees no lag anymore. Since she does not use USB devices much the loss of one of her few USB ports is not a big concern. If you are severely limited in your USB ports but really want to have full spectrum use of your WiFi, you should still consider this little adapter. It is low profile and after several months has shown itself to be quite reliable. The only complaint I have is that the drivers were not provided on a mini CD in the package. As long as you have some Internet access you can pull the drivers down on your own. However if you have no INet access on the computer you plan to use the adapter on, you will need to find a way to get the drivers before the adapter will function for you. It seems that a few cents more in materials to include a mini CD would have been a nicer option by the manufacturer. Beyond this, you will find the adapter is a solid work horse at a nice price.

I was not able to get the adapter to work. See the sequence of events below. 1. Turned off windows defender, turned off 3rd party anti-virus app 2. Loaded drivers etc. using the Asus supplied CD 3. Install program hung on the installation step of Cisco EAP-Fast. Waited over an hour for it to see if it was just slow process. 4. Uninstalled and tried it again, same results. 5. Downloaded the install software from Asus website, same results as using the CD 6. Called Asus support, spent an hour with them but it still did not install correctly. Asus support team was very cooperative and tried diligently but eventually gave up and suggested contacting Microsoft for help. Needles to say Microsoft’s 6 different fixes to apply the did not work. I did extensive research on Web for possible solution, none of them worked. I did turnup a number of threads from other users with similar issue. None of them had a solution. 7. Bought this item because of the good reviews but the results were not what I hoped for, I was able to return the item. I’ll do some and research and try another adapter. 8. I’m running windows 10 professional 64 bit on a 3 year old HP laptop.

I have been very happy with my Asus gaming laptop for the three years or so that I've owned it. I'm not a gamer, but it has served me well for the many graphics applications I use regularly. The one shortcoming the Asus has is that it is limited to 2.4GhZ wireless. I did not know how much of a limitation this was until I upgraded my office internet service to 150 mb. I was disapplointed to find htat my throughput was just 40 mb The tech who installed the service told me I should look into an adapter to up the wifi speed. I bought the Asus unit because I've been so happy with this computer. It was more expensive than others I have seen, but I wanted to be sure it would work properly. Imagine my surprise (and delight) when I ran speedtest and pegged the needle at about 160 mb. It's like having a brand new laptop. Totally happy with this very small unit--the dongle just protrudes about 1/4" from the case of the computer. Works perfectly.

Bought this because I had a couple windows PC's wherein there apparently was a Windows update that screwed up the drivers for the network cards. Thought that both laptops had fried wifi network cards, so I bought this so I could continue to use them. Upon using this device, which worked seamlessly and swiftly, new updates occurred and I found that the updates corrected the network card issues. Considering I've always had funky experiences with Windows updates and am mainly a Mac user, I will have this in my arsenal so that if there are issues I can quickly find a solution related to connectivity. If for some reason network cards do get fried, this device is excellent because it's so small there's no worries about plugging it into a USB and worrying about an antenna or it sticking out far from the USB port making where you use it (lap, etc) challenging. Definitely would recommend this. Install was really quite easy and swift. Immediately worked without issue. Definitely would recommend to someone needing wifi connectivity or even as a preventive step in the event of wifi connectivity issues that may come about. Good tool to have in the toolbox.

The 2 other people before me have described exactly what wrong. Asus in my opinion has some of the highest quality products. The Best Buy employee suggested I swap out the netgear adapter in my had with this Asus...because it will " blow netgear out of the water" Obviously he had no idea what he was talking about. If your going to push a pc product do it because you truly have experience with it. If it hadn't of been Asus brand I would have kept walking but gave it a shot. Worked fine at first except after windows restarted. After windows restart the adapter shows up but no wireless signals are found. Only was to fix this is to unplug and plug it back in. After that comes the overheating. After a few hours the usb gets incredibly hot and will just disconnect and stop working. I thought it was driver issues to begin with however after discovering how hot it was after it would disconnect it all made sense. I believe Asus needs to go back to the drawing books with this one. And yes I tested with every usb slot I have along with a second pc. Long story short don't waste your time or money on this. I spent way too much time finding the cause of all these problems.

I was quite surprised when the built-in network adapter failed on my Asus laptop. As a former PC builder/assembler, I have always known Asus products to be the best of the best; top-quality components, excellent build quality, great customer service. I was very please to see that Best Buy offered a USB Network Adapter by my favorite manufacturer. I checked stock at my local BB retail store on the web page, order online and picked it up at the store an hour later. I downloaded a driver from the Asus site (only to find later it was included in the box on a mini-CD), popped in the USB "Nub" and watched it install itself in Windows 10. When prompted, I identified my network as "Home" and I was back online. It was that easy. Less than two hours elapsed between my discovering the problem and having it fixed and running (actually improving my performance as my built-in adapter was 802.11 N and the new Asus is dual band 802.11 AC). Kudos to Best Buy and Asus.

Asus's wireless products have been very good to me. I have had two of their 360 degree wireless routers (One I got for my parents, the other served me for two years before I gave it to a friend and it still runs). I am amazed because my father's wireless was outdated and had no 5G capabilities and this gave it to him. Range is no longer and his house is a bit larger than the average...and the wifi is at the far end of the house from where he sits. On my Lenovo Y510P the 2.4Ghz WiFi it had in it does not work well in apartment complexes so I needed 5Ghz and this works great. Downloading GTA V on Steam I was getting 13mbps to 15mpbs. Connection has been rock solid. It's small size means that if you forget it is in the laptop and say walk around with it you don't end up doing what I did to my other Asus Adapter (door frame + USB Wireless = sadness). Great value for money, great product, easy setup.

    Terrible Ping/Packet Loss

I recently upgraded from a laptop and built a pc. I wanted an easy access Wifi-Adapter to use, and I grabbed the Asus Dual Band Usb Adapter. Our internet rarely has had issues, my laptop was always at a constant 30 ping 0% packet loss rate, but with this adapter, i'm fluctuating between 400-2000 constantly, with 20%+ packet loss making talking with friends online nearly impossible since the voice becomes choppy with the missing packets, and anything from videos on youtube not loading or buffering incredibly slow, to playing online games being nearly impossible to play efficiently without teleporting everywhere. 2 stars for the convenience and stealth of the adapter, but I'd rather run a 30 ft ethernet cable across the house than use this.

...is exactly where this thing belongs. Pros: You can plug-n-play without the CD (for most computers). Connects to the Internet. Cons: Crappy connection. Tested on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge with the same crappy results. However, my Samsung phone connected to the same WiFi router in the same room, barely a foot away from this adapter (actually further from the WiFi router) gets promised speeds. No problem. I get it. This is most likely something for a laptop that doesn't come with its own WiFi adapter. Regardless, it should work. It's dual banded and is recognized by the network as a 5 GHz device. I checked the ASUS website for drivers, downloaded the one and only driver available, and nothing changed after a reboot.

I bought this to replace a free standing adapter. It was very easy to install and Windows 10 recognized it immediately. The only free USB port I had was on the back of my computer which is next to an exterior wall. My router is in another room about 20 feet away and this adapter does not pull in the signal as strongly as the free standing one did. It functions OK but because it doesn't pick up the signal as well my internet slows down when I have a large volume of data. I would recommend it for a computer that is within 10 or 15 feet of the router or in the same room but for a desktop that has several walls and some distance between the computer and the router I would suggest getting a free standing receiver that has its own base and can be moved around a little to get a better signal.

I am very frustrated after using the installation CD numerous times to load the drivers for this USB WI Fi adapter & it will not recognize any of the drivers, so I am unable to use the device & will return for a Linksys. Keeps saying no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device & I can't even click on the "update driver" button as it's greyed out. I read numerous other reviews where this is a recurring problem & they say it's a great item "if" & "after" you manage to get the drivers loaded. I even went to the Asus website & did a download of the drivers using a different computer (since I have no wi fi on mine) & then used a Flash Drive to try to upload the info to my laptop, but even that didn't work, so I am done wasting my time. Really wanted this to work, but out of time & patience for this.

This item is super easy to install, the disk does everything for you. Its so small it can be plugged in to any usb port & forgotten about. Can leave it plugged and not worry about it getting im the way of anything, or take it out and store when not using it. This item picks up both 2.4 & 5 ghz frequencies which is super nice if you have a lot of Wi-Fi traffic. It picks up & holds the signal well. The packaging was a small simple box (easily disposed of) that contains the adapter and 1 disk and a small set of instructions. I highly recommend this to anyone needing to add Wi-Fi to a device or even an old device that only picks up the 2.4 ghz. With this item I didnt have to buy a new upgraded drive, I was able to. It this much cheaper alternative and recieve fabulous effects.

The WiFi speed on my 2-yr old Dell XPS laptop suddenly dropped to almost nothing (around 1-3 Mbs/s). I still have no idea what happened... I suspect somebody screwed up the latest driver, but I and my IT guy couldn't find any fix. So I figured I'd try this as a workaround. I disabled the laptop adapter and plugged this in. Without the driver, the speed was crazy bad (0.03). But after installing the driver, I'm getting speeds ranging from 40-110 (depending on the network)! My only gripe is the speed has disappeared a couple times. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver fixed it, but that's pretty annoying. Hopefully it doesn't happen too often.

I am a HUGE fan of Asus (Have the Asus ROG laptop, Asus RT-AC88U AC3100, etc.). However, I was very disappointed with this nano USB WiFi. And therein lies the issue. The USB nano is SMALL. I don't think this was designed for gaming but more for cosmetics and easy to plug and play. I really wanted to give this a higher rating for what it was designed for (it definitely wasn't designed for gaming it doesn't feel like) but the inconsistent connection to my router was annoying; especially when I was downloading Windows Updates and it would disconnect in the middle. I ended up just having to carry the computer to the router and using an ethernet cable. Amazon has a review on a device like this from Asus (older model) and it wasn't good. I should have trusted that but this newer model got my curiosity to see if they improved it.

Hey Guys, I bought this product for my girlfriends PC, she games on the same network I do and we both play seamlessly. It works wonderful and achieves the speeds described, however it leaves a few thing desired! The speeds are great, size, and price is all great, the connectivity is slightly finicky. It works great for weeks/months then out of no where will drop connection. Then she has to unplug it and re-plug it in. Not the end of the world but definitely not desired. Usually does this 2-3 times before returning to normal operation. Overall i'd give this a 4.5/5 star review. -IceDelnorte

I needed a new wireless adapter for my Windows 10 PC. The first brand I tried would not keep me connected to the Internet. I was constantly getting dropped. I tried a second brand and I never could get it installed because the set-up CD said I did't have the administrator rights to install the drivers. Back to Best Buy for the Asus and it installed very easily and quickly and has worked out great. I was surprised at how tiny it is. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and the Asus adapter is the same size as the adapter for my keyboard and mouse. I've read through the Asus support pages on the Asus website and it looks like they provide a lot of good online support. It also looks like they offer other kinds of tech support. I think buying the Asus was the right desicion

Granted its connecting to a $350 Asus Router from 15 feet away, this adapter exceeded my expectations. Built a new PC and completely forgot to get a PCI network adapter. I ran over to best buy because I was itching to get this PC online and they didn't have any PCI cards, but they did have this. Extremely easy driver install, immediately connected to my router, and has had no issues. Ping always around 10ms and I ran a ping for 24 hours with 0 packets lost. Phenomenal for a USB network adapter. Extremely impressed, still use it and never bought that PCI card.
