I'd recommend if you have the $$$
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As someone who's always been a console gamer (mainly Xbox and PlayStation), and with my only handheld experience being the Nintendo Switch, I was pretty skeptical about diving into PC gaming with the ROG Ally X. However, after about a month of using it, I have to say I'm impressed—especially with how well it runs AAA games like Elden Ring. Playing with friends online has been an amazing experience, and once you get used to using Windows for gaming, it's not as daunting as it seems. That said, there are a few issues I feel are worth mentioning: Price Point: I wouldn't recommend this for the current price, especially if you're not planning to stick to AAA titles. In my opinion, you'd be better off going with an older model if you want to save some cash. Open-Box Warning: I was fortunate enough to buy this open-box from BestBuy at a discounted price, but here's a heads-up: BestBuy does NOT test their open-box products. Mine arrived with a pretty serious issue—it wouldn't hold a charge and shut down every time I unplugged it. I nearly returned it, but decided to check the internals first. Turns out, the clip connecting the power supply wasn't even plugged in, and one side of it looks broken, which probably caused it to come loose. After plugging it back in, everything seems to be working now, but it was a stressful experience. Quality Control Issues: Speaking of issues, Asus's quality control is a bit concerning. The console itself feels premium in some ways, but also surprisingly cheap in others. The horror stories you hear about defective units? I believe them now. So, buy at your own risk. Ergonomics: For me, the console is uncomfortable to hold for extended periods. My wrists start to hurt after about an hour, and the lack of a grip makes it easy for the console to slip out of my hands—especially when they get sweaty. This is a big drawback compared to traditional controllers. Button Feel: While most of the buttons, triggers, and analog sticks are fine, I'm not a fan of the face buttons. They feel a bit "mushy" when pressed. Maybe I'm just too used to the feel of the PS5 controller. In hindsight, I think I would have opted for the older model of the ROG Ally with the Z1 Extreme chip, especially if I could find it open-box or used. Alternatively, I'd wait for the SteamDeck 2, as Valve seems to have better quality control and their console is reportedly more comfortable to hold. Overall, while the ROG Ally X has its strengths, it's not without its flaws. It’s a good choice if you’re focused on AAA gaming and don't own a gaming PC, but there are definitely some trade-offs to consider.

Not sure why this is getting review bombed.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m loving this thing. This is my first handheld, aside from little trials on my son’s Nintendo Switch. Anyways! As an avid PC gamer I was really looking for something to bring on-the-go, like on family trips and such, and a laptop would still be too much. This thing fits the bill perfectly. Performance-wise, I couldn’t ask for anything better in such a device. Coming from a PC with a 12700k, 32GB’s of RAM, and a 3060ti, all on a QHD screen, I actually think cyberpunk looks and runs better on this lol. Aesthetically, this Ally is gorgeous. The lights are on point, and the black is sweet. I was worried about the previous white ones getting too dirty. Mechanically speaking, everything seems in order. The sticks feel wonderful, with a little concave indent to keep your thumbs in. The triggers are fast but not that super-light loose fast or anything like that. The screen is amazing. I almost thought it was an OLED with how vibrant the colors and everything are. Moving the mouse around with a thumb stick is super fun for some reason, and super smooth too. Battery life seems good(I know a lot of people talked about how the previous allies had a terrible battery), and temps seem ok too. Can’t ask for perfection in these types of things, like a laptop. All in all, I love it. Here’s the ONE reason I dropped a star: finding compatible games. This was a hard start. Jedi survivor works, but graphically it’s a bit rough. Cyberpunk looks great and runs smooth, controls all work. Both SWKOTOR games don’t work very well control-wise. The new SW Bounty Hunter runs great, but the horizontal camera movement stutters. The Robin Hood game on game pass works, but the controls like to bobble around so that was a no go. Still gonna be trying other games soon.

After tinkering, it's my dream come true
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Im fortunate enough to have this and a Steam Deck oled. I love my Deck and wouldn't trade it for the world. But this caught me off guard with how great the graphics are. You dont need an OLED screen when you have 120 fps and 24 gig ram. Its well worth it. Here are two tips. Youtube how to put it into hibernation mode instead of sleep. Its easy. Also, Youtube how to add a drive for the SD card, it took a minute to figure out. You then have to go into steam, exit big picture mode and and go into settings and add the SD card there as well. After these two things, it is literally a portable handheld gaming PC. Have fun.

Possibly can equal my steamdeck
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So i have steamdeck and i want to try this product to see for myself. So after almost a month of using it, i can say that its more powerful compare to steamdeck. But playing on its native resolution (full HD) the fps i get is kind of similar to steamdeck. A little better maybe. I always wanted to play on native resolution because i looks so much better. I capped my framerate to 60 fps depends on the game to conserve battery and to run cooler. While the handle, and the grips and the overall ergonomics i can say that steamdeck is still better. I like the rog ally x because i can play my epic, battlenet and other game platforms games without a hassle. So windows os is a downside and also an upside. My goto when i am going out is still my steamdeck because of ease to play. Its like a nintendo switch. So i think, overall experience based on the good and the bad. The rog ally x is evenly matched to my steamdeck. Recommended.

Cant play new Forza Motorsport
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The good: It's fast for a handheld, great performance and market leader in the segment for sure. It run windows which offers at least the ability to attempt to play some games that are simply not available on the steamdeck - aka Forza Motorsports. Great NVMe performance / watt - and optional ability to swap it if you want to get even better nvme drive. Overall I liked this device but I only bought it to play 1 game mainly and it can't... Out of a last ditch effort I ran the cloud restore, which worked amazing - love how easy it is to deploy a fresh OS on this as well. Great BIOS and feature rich device. The Bad: I bought this because in store demo of the orignial Ally showed it playing Forza Horizon 5 - which worked awesome and I mainly play Forza Motorsport on my PC so grabbed this to add some racing in a more casual setting - but unfortunately, as powerful as the device is, it's not enough for Forza Motorsport. I don't think this is a Ally X specific issue as it is a 780M/AMD driver problem - which I get. So I will be returning as was main use case to replace my Steamdeck. Hopefully the nVidia new handheld will be powerful enough, fingers crossed! The Ugly: Arrived brand new with seal cut - seems to have been tampered with before I ever got it in the mail - needs better quality control perhaps? Left trigger also stopped working, the spring mechanism seems to be an issue.

Great improvement over the first iteration.
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great improvement over the first iteration. No issues with the product so far, but I guess time will tell. I bought two. One for me and one for my daughter. Both devices are doing great. I appreciate the extra memory and battery. The first iteration was great, this one's excellent. Coming from a stream deck oled, i can truly appreciate the value of this gaming handheld. The steam deck was great but I felt it was a bit limited in the pc handheld space where , as to this and any other windows device, the possibilities are endless up to the hardware and software's lifespan. Kind of like apple and android, the steam deck is like apple and this is like android. Just like apple, steam deck runs as intended because thats built solely for gaming especially how the UI was built for Linux. Where as to the ROG Ally, just like an android, it's an open source not limited to software. You can run anything on this because it's windows. But it just takes a few more steps. But the new and improve armory crate software is a step in the right direction to making this easier to navigate windows. All in all, a truly great device

Powerful handheld!! Asus.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What can I say, im a PC gamer mainly, but I own other pieces of hardware, ps5,switch,xbox and so on, i was very hesitant to buy this unit because of the cost, but what a machine, this piece of hardware is more powerful than I expected, i like playing MMO like FFXIV and this hamdheld can run it almost at 60fps on turbo mode (Laptop hight settings), the controller is very slick and it feels great to hold on your hands, the weight is on point and the battery last very long on my opinion, and since its windows you can run all your apps, convine with a BT mouse i also got i was able to modified jist like a PC, feel great to have this console and now i can be anywhere with wifi or hotspot and play FFXIV and other AAA games. Go for it, indid and im happy with it. This unit exceeded expectations. Will recommend 10/10

You wont be disappointed.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I havent found a flaw with this device that i found with is predecessor and its competitor the steam deck. I owned both previous. I sold them as one left performance to be desired and the ally 2023 the performance was there but not the battery life and it being a handheld it made no sense for me to take it with me without battery banks and chargers to get only about 40 minutes of battery life with AAA games. So i returned it to best buy. This is exactly what i was looking for a year ago and im not disappointed. I now have 24gb of ram and the cpu and gpu have been optimized. With custom settings and amd afmf 2 drivers or using lossless frames app i get great frames if i need it. Games run great. It beats any other device when it comes to ps3 and xbox 360 emulation. Indie games just run forever on this device. I have been impressed so far.

Excellent and exceeded expectations
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Currently had this device for roughly 2 weeks and it just exceed expectations. It’s completely capable of operating at a laptop level, which was not my original intent for this, but it’s absolutely welcome as I don’t have a laptop currently. Its currently runs most games I’ve tried (borderlands 3 and diablo 4) really well. Although some games may not be fully optimised for joysticks. I thing I should add is that the device needs many updates at the beginning, including one that is essential for the device to default to joystick and not keyboard when you launch the game. This update will be prompted at the bios when restart the ROG, do not skip this!

You Won’t Regret it
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first handheld PC and I don’t regret my purchase at all. So much power in the Ally X, super impressive. I’m able to play games like Black Myth Wukong, Overwatch 2, Baldurs Gate 3 and Elden Ring with little to no issues whatsoever (obviously perfect for cozy games as well.) I already own a PC, but the convenience of having something like this just made me enjoy gaming all over again, especially with me traveling a lot these days. I plan to upgrade my SSD to 4TB’s because 1TB is just not enough. Definitely would recommend!

found my ally:)
|Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.very happy with my rog ally x!!! i originally pruchased rhe leigion go, but quickly changad my mind and went with the ally x…for that extra touch of performance in ram and better battery life. although the LGO has that FPS mode which is very cool imo, my main focus was raw performance, which is exactly what rhe ally x brings:). Games such as cod mw3 with performance optimization settings ROGs command center, and low to medium graphics in game gives you a good 90-100 FPS.

Love it!!
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Epic handheld. I’ve been playing non stop since launch day and have yet to have a single complaint. The difference in battery life from the og is massive! Performance wise it’s about the same but the 1% lows will feel better on higher fps games and fps shooters though. It’s also nice being able to run Spotify and discord in the background without struggling for ram The comfort is massively better too and the overall job asus did was extremely good. Upgrading the nvme too was super easy and I love that we can use 2280nvme drives with a heat sink without modifying it. This handheld also is a modders dream. It’s been super fun to play with and do a few mods with as well.

Love my Ally X
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Takes about 30-40min for initial setup but then you're golden to start gaming. Being a Windows based machine you will run into the occasional instance of the handheld not knowing if to use Gamepad or Desktop mode so you'll need to manually switch to it but you'll have access to a bigger library of games than if you had a Linux based OS. The battery life is amazing and can last anywhere from 3 to 8-9 hours depending on how intensive your game is. The Ally X also has multiple Operating Modes to use less power and quiet fans or use max on both depending on what your current task is. My only con would be that the Dpad recently started to squeak when pressing down.

Impressive
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this instead of the steam deck and I have no regrets at all. Both are good and the Ally has far less restrictions on the games you can buy/play. The screen even though not OLED like the Steam deck is noticeably sharper and clear (the steam decks colors are more vivid for sure). The power of the ally really lets you get great FPS/graphics balance with some tinkering. If you got the money the ROG Ally X is a top choice, if you’re on a budget get the steam deck OLED it’ll do you just fine

Best handheld Gaming Pc!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Rog ally is an amazing gaming device. The Rog X is even better. Everything is upgraded except for the screen, that’s the same. The audio, buttons, ram, battery, internal storage, and ergonomics are better. The only thing I don’t like are the back m1 and m2 buttons. I prefer the original ally m1 and m2 buttons more but over all it’s a great portable gaming pc. it’s probably the best one on the market. If you already have an ally I don’t think it’s worth it to upgrade unless you just have money to spend like that, but If you don’t have one definitely pick this one up.

I Love This Thing!
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had the original Ally since around Christmas and this is definitely an upgrade. The boost in the ram is noticeable in how much faster load screens are. I also love the color. Oddly the only games I have trouble with are some of the slightly older lego games, for some reason they just keep stuttering and stalling. The changes in the layout really do make it more comfortable to hold and the device itself has a bit more grip to it. I put a 4tb ssd in it (which was ridiculously easy) and I'm set!

Review
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The ROG Ally X is actually really good. My product had no defects out of the box which is great. 1tb storage is enough for some but not for me so I upgraded it myself. The Ally X works great and runs games well! It is fantastic and so far no issues. Get this if you can afford it. If not, get a steam deck. Both are fantastic!

Sell your steam deck
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Die hard Valve fanboy, but I must admit the ROG ally X is way ahead of the competition. I loved my steam deck since i received it a year ago but everything called out to me from the X, EVERYTHING. Specially the bigger battery.....steam deck owners, you know exactly what im talking about. Sell it and get something better. GFX, BATTERY, ERGONOMICS, DISPLAY ARE WORTH THE BUY.

More of the same, but better.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great device! It's very similar to the original Ally Z1 Extreme with improvements in battery, comfort, color, d-pad and analog controls Etc..... It blows me away to think that they missed the opportunity to add a built-in kickstand! I have to go four stars because of the removal of the XG mobile port. I bought the 4090 XG Mobile to use with the Ally and Rog Acronym.

This is the handheld to beat!!!
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ally X is the one to have. If you dont already have a Ally, get this! The battery life is great, AAA titles will get you around 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Emulation is king here! Look forward to having hours of fun playing tour favorite retro games. This is a full fledge laptop in a handheld form factor, so on the back end, be prepared to configure things behind the scenes to make the usability and playabilty more seamless. This is the ONE!
