very good product but one big outstanding problem
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.the laptop is overall a very good value for the performance it pumps out but the only problem is the screen, the color accuracy is meh (which is was aware of before I purchased the product, so no hate on asus). But it has this white bleeding effect on the top and bottom right corner. It really bothers me when Im watching a dark video or playing a dark game, i hope my pictures give a good example of this.

Beast!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's a beast in disguise! Great upgrade potential Raid 0 Performance is 10GBs+ R 6.2+GBs W with 2 980 pro drives and 64gb ddr5 RAM is too cool for school! It takes a hit on the screen for not having 100%rgb and the Keys could have been RGB backlit. Overall the software utilities are solid and have no issues just really impressed with this generation of tuf f15 laptop. Working well with all current games at very high to ultra settings.

By far the BEST when it was $1100
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought it for $1100 when it sale, this is the BEAST. RTX 3070 for this price is like a jackpot (my friend told me that). Many youtube review said the screen is bad but NO IT IS NOT. If compare with other brand, maybe its abit dim but who care at this price when 3070 is in this laptop.

A Balanced Laptop, As It Should Be
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having used two ASUS gaming laptops before, I am curious to see how this particular model, featuring Intel’s 12th generation processor, codenamed “Alder Lake,” will work. I have previously used AMD processors in the two laptops prior to this. So this will be interesting if Intel has really come back to becoming a real competitor. The particular model is FX517ZR-F15.I73070, which according to ASUS’s landing page for their 2022 TUF F15 series, is one tiny step away from the top configuration, giving 512GB of SSD storage instead of 1TB. As for what’s inside for hardware, an Intel Core i7 12650H processor powers the system. It’s a 12th generation CPU that features 6 performance cores capable of 12 threads and 4 efficiency cores (totalling 16 threads capable). System memory is made by Samsung using 2 8GB DDR5-4800 SODIMM. Unlike some laptop models out there, nothing is soldered down so there is room to upgrade memory capacity (up to 32GB total). For 3D gaming, a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 with 8GB of dedicated video memory is used. While the GPU itself isn’t the top of the line, it is definitely best for 1080p gaming regardless of what titles are thrown at it. The laptop itself is also in a strange position now for its release, as tech-savvy and PC gamers are already looking ahead to how NVIDIA’s 40 series will perform. But that’s a different story altogether. For storage, it uses an Intel 670p NVMe M.2 SSD with a part/model number of SSDPEKNU512GZ. While it is not the fastest or the best on the market, it is just “good enough” for everyday tasks. To top it off is a 1080p display capable of 144Hz refresh rate. There are other configurations that either provide higher refresh rate or a higher resolution. But I believe 1080p in 15 inches is best suited for this size and 144Hz is plenty fast (anything higher is overkill, in my opinion). Overall on paper, it looks to be a very balanced laptop. Around the laptop are a single HDMI 2.0b port, a Thunderbolt 4 port, a USB Type-C port, 2 USB Type-A port, and an ethernet port. The inclusion of the ethernet port is definitely welcomed, as WiFi isn’t always guaranteed you’ll get the fastest speed. Speaking of WiFi, the laptop uses a WiFi 6 AX201 adapter while its ethernet brother uses the Intel I219-LM for a gigabit connection. The inclusion of a Thunderbolt 4 port is both surprising yet not at the same time. Having such a port allows for some interesting devices to be plugged in for high speed data transfers and other utilities. There is also a 3.5mm combo headphone/mic jack but that is sadly becoming a dying species amongst those using gaming headsets. Windows 11 Home comes preinstalled. It is a necessity due to Intel’s new CPU design which takes a page from smartphones and tablet processors. Setup is simple and guides you through the entire process. However, Windows 11 requires an internet connection to download whatever files it wants, which adds to the overall setup time. I would rather have the entire operating system be there so that the device can be up and running within 10-15 minutes, rather than 30+. After updating anything necessary – video drivers, system firmware/BIOS, it was time to start trying out some games. Due to limited time and job responsibilities, I can only run 3 games to test its performance – Genshin Impact, Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons, and Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered. The RTX 3070 expectly ran all 3 without breaking a sweat. While I do have strange GPU usage with Genshin Impact (stuck at 30fps, did want to waste time trying to fix this), it still ran without any problem. Guild Wars 2 is unique where the video card/GPU isn’t much of a deciding factor but how fast the CPU is. As such, framerate performance varies depending on how many players are being rendered, how detailed those models are, and what effects are attached to them. Striking a balance between visual details and performance is always a handful. In Ni no Kuni, the game is so lightweight that I can set the game to use Intel’s own integrated graphics to run it and have no performance hit. As for the rest of the laptop, I have some opinions on. The monitor lid has a tab that protrudes out. While this makes it easier to lift the lid up, I do not like its design. Either this is due to poor design judgment or to the camera hardware taking up space around there. At least it’s 90% capable of handling the one handed lid opening test. The keyboard is a typical laptop keyboard. The WASD keys are translucent to show the most light through when gaming. Traditionally I’m not much of a fan of laptop keys and it’s always tricky and difficult to handle games that makes use of a lot of keys (ie. MMO). I forgot to mention the quality of the speakers and audio. It does get reasonably loud but I haven’t had the time to really try how it handles other media. WiFi 6 performance is currently unknown, as I used to have a WiFi 6 router/AP on hand to use (an issue that is separate from this). But WiFi performance is great as I was able to saturate the download speed of my internet connection. As far as upgrades go, memory and SSD can be upgraded. There is also an unused M.2 slot for adding on additional storage. Getting to any of them can be tricky. All but 1 screw can be taken off and removing the panel is tricky. It’s held on with snap tabs and screws so it’s recommended to have a plastic prying tool on hand (even a plastic knife works). Overall this is a pretty good laptop. Having the latest 12th generation Intel processor is nice. In terms of product cycle, the RTX 3070 is showing its age and the RTX 40 series is just around the corner. Granted, despite its hardware age, it’s still a capable GPU and should last for several years. Windows 11 is a hit-or-miss thing – you’re either fine with it or you hate it with a passion. So is it worth the price tag it’s asking? That’s tough to say. If you’re in need of an Intel gaming laptop, this is a good snag. But if you’re an AMD fanboy, I’d be on the fence on this one. It’s a compelling laptop and the specs are very well balanced. The good: Intel 12th gen, RTX 3070, RAM and M.2 upgradable, 144Hz refresh rate The bad: SSD isn’t PCIe gen4 The ugly: 720p webcam (c’mon, man!), DDR5 prices at the time of review Verdict: Recommended

Thin & Light Gaming Prowess
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.TLDR: (that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read) A gaming laptop has to be a good laptop first and then have the guts to stand up to the punishment of graphics-intensive games. This laptop meets that challenge and then some for a mid-range gaming rig. Pros: * Bright display with thin bezels. * Thin and light. * Good enough graphics card to support most games. * Acceptable battery life. * Backlit keyboard with numeric keypad and highlighted gaming keys. * Convenient shortcut keys and gaming dashboard. Cons: * No touch screen. * Highlighted gaming keys on keyboard are distracting when not playing games. * Port layout is off-balance; almost all on left edge. * Thermal performance isn’t as good as you’d expect with all of the venting ports. Details - Setup: The provided AC adapter is not small but I’ve seen larger. It has a short detachable cord for the wall outlet end and a long non-detachable cord with a large barrel-type plug for the laptop end. That laptop end plugs into the middle of the left edge of the notebook rather than near the back as most would expect. I know it’s a small thing, but the AC adapter’s style and finish don’t match the notebook and there is no obvious way to wrap the cord neatly around the adapter when bringing it along. Basic setup is as you’d expect for a Windows 11 laptop but there were a few setup screens in the flow that seemed gaming-specific like setting up alternate keyboard layouts. It could have been a fluke, but the clock was not set to auto-update so I had to manually set that up after completing Windows 11 setup. The keyboard is backlit and during setup, it throbbed (blinked) which was annoying but not critical. Details - Typical Usage: Overall Design - the shell is a bit more angular and aggressive looking that other more productivity-focused notebooks. There are ton of useful ports, but nearly all of them are grouped on the left edge. While this may be convenient for some to have all of the cords on the same side, it also makes the notebook a bit imbalanced with all of those cables hanging off one side. The 1080p screen is bright and clear but has a shiny rather than a matte finish so it tends to reflect room lights more than you might prefer for gaming. The black plastic casing material really shows fingerprints so best to wash your hands frequently before gaming or risk having a notebook suitable for CSI. Keyboard - the backlit keys are large and spaced well with large, easy to read legends. There is a slightly narrow numeric keypad and a bung of shortcut keys, too. The WASD keys are visually highlighted which is nice when gaming, but a bit distracting when doing anything else as they really stick out. Three of the shortcut keys are gaming-specific; one to adjust the keyboard backlighting pattern, one for changing the processing mode (like a turbo mode) and one for the ASUS gaming-focused dashboard. There are several status lights on the top of the keyboard that are even visible when the lid is closed. Graphics - I tried several games including Star Citizen. The display is 1080p so that’s what the game was set to. The graphics looked as nice as can be expected at 1080p but there were a few instances of video anomalies when pushed hard. Given that this is a mid-level gaming notebook, I think it handled everything well. One thing of note, though, is that when pushed hard, the thermals really notch up. There are tons of vent holes on the bottom, back and sides. You probably don’t want this this actually resting on your lap while playing unless you like hot legs ;-). Probably not a great idea to put the notebook on a plastic table top, either. Battery life is adequate for a gaming rig; you probably won’t get hours on end of completely disconnected gameplay, but it will work for a while without plugging in. Conclusion: A nice mid-range gaming rig with some well thought-out touches. It isn’t the best you can find, but then again, it isn’t priced or expected to be. It’ll handle almost anything you throw at it but might start breathing heavy under max load.

Good desktop replacement
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I reviewed one of these models last year but with the 11th Gen i7 with the same 3070. In terms of performance, this model does seem a fair bit more potent over that one, given the decent bump with the new 12th Gen’s and the inclusion of DDR5. I can’t recall, nor have the data from that review, but there’s both good and bad, but this is pretty par for the course with laptops. The Good, well there’s some nice changes. DDR5 does seem to be a welcome addition, and I think it does actually help with the overall gaming performance. The 12th Gen i7 is a good step up. Last years had a 4 Core/8 Thread chip whereas this one has 6 Performance cores and 4 Efficiency Cores with 16 total Threads. This one has peaked out at 4.7Ghz and seems to hold there despite the temps. The looks of the Notebook are more appealing and less gamer like on the exterior. So far for performance, since they dropped a new update, notably 1.5, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to run quite well. Even when it was down in the 40’s it felt smooth as warm knife through butter. I can’t say this was the case on the previous model. Per their benchmark on Ray Tracing Ultra with DLSS on auto I was getting an average of 45 FPS. I fiddled with some settings and set RT to Medium I got bump to around 50 FPS on average. Cutting out RT and setting the game to Ultra, I got another 10% bump, this was however with DLSS disabled. I then ran one more benchmark with Ultra and DLSS at Quality, this is where I saw the largest improvement. In the screenshot, you can see I saw as high as 123 FPS, but an average of well over 70. If you’re not worried about Ray Tracing, this system can push even the mighty 2077 without too much effort. Another game I tested was No Man’s Sky. This game has been all over the place for me in the past. On my old desktop with a 2080 (non-Ti) without DLSS and at 3440x1440, I was seeing in the 60-70’s on Ultra settings. Still giving a more than playable experience, but enabling DLSS drove that up to the 90’s for a constant stable experience. Granted this is only at 1080p on this system, but the performance here especially with DLSS is fantastic, faster than with the 2080. For the drawbacks, there’s definitely some here. For starters, temperatures. This thing get’s hot, that’s pretty on par with most gaming focused notebooks. During my 2077 testing, I recorded 95C on the CPU and 72C on the GPU. That’s dangerously hot. You do not want to have this thing on your lap, if you do, you can likely get burned. That in Fahrenheit translates to 203 degrees, that’s darn close to Water boiling temp. You could likely fry an egg on the underside. The keyboard was quite toasty during this testing. I made sure to have plenty of ventilation. I had the system elevated as well. Now this was a similar issue I had with the previous model, not as hot, but very close. For something that would essentially replace a desktop, I think the fascination with keeping these types of systems thin is the wrong way to go. The 3070 also is reported to be a 140W chip, however this one is limited to 80W and 100W in Turbo mode. This is probably a good thing given how hot the Intel chip gets. I can only imagine how hot systems with the 3080 get given that’s a 140W base part. Storage size is disappointing, though it is expandable. Obviously, this was a compromise in providing a new 12th gen i7. The speed of the drive is adequate. Using CrystalDiskMark I measured a Read of 2900MB/s and Writes were around 1600MB/s. This is a lower end Intel NVME. I don’t know much about the drive itself, but in last years model, there was a faster drive installed and it was 1TB in size. Only difference here is the 12th Gen versus the 11th Gen. So going off that, with the temp’s, this brings about the question on noise levels. The system sounds like a jet engine. The fans really kick in when driving this thing under load. You’re going to want to get a cooling pad to use with this thing. It may or may not help temps, but in reality, till systems stop getting slimmer and companies start making these systems thicker with much better cooling, I genuinely am concerned on the longevity of them. The TJMax on these 12th Gens is 100C. Sustained usage for anything more than maybe an hour at a time at Performance or most especially Turbo settings is ill advised as that’s pushing the envelope for reliability. HDMI output is disappointing. The unit only has a 2.0 port, despite the 12th gen having native support for 4k120 over 2.1, the RTX 30 series also support 2.1. Why it was chosen to only offer 2.0 is beyond me, but it really would have been nice as I would have liked to connect it to my Neo G9 monitor and test it at higher resolutions. It is nice however that the unit has a Thunderbolt 4 port so you can connect it to an external display using Type-C to Displayport. I lack the cable and display for this. There is DisplayPort over Type-C but they’re limited to 4k60. The power plug location has always befuddled me. On the last model, it was in-between the ports on the left side, now it’s behind the ports. It would be welcome to have it on the rear of the unit. Outside of the disappointing connectivity for secondary displays, the temperatures, and the storage size, there’s a lot to like, but a few things to not. If you are looking at something to replace an older desktop, but still can’t source a GPU in this crazy time, it’s a good option, just be sure you’ve got a cooling pad and plenty ventilation.
