The only reason why I got this laptop is for the 1tb harddrive, spent over 400 and this thing is not worth that much, its slower than a laptop I had in 2016 (that I got for the same price), the laptop dies after 2 hours or charge, the speakers are garbage and ALSO on the bottom of the laptop (meaning it will always be covered/muffled), this is literally the only laptop I have had where if I close it instead of going into sleep mode the laptop has to boot back up, and this is the only laptop i have had where it freezes after booting up (where it shows the home screen and you have to click to get to the sign in) meaning after waiting 5 minutes for it to come on you have to restart it and wait another 5 minutes to try and sign in I honestly wanted to try and do some basic editing on the laptop because I thought the cpu and 12gb memory could handle it but the laptop vomits trying to run with 2 browsers open and I gave up I honestly cant wait to replace this thing

      Dear Bruce,

We do understand your disappointment and the inconvenience this may have caused.

If you are experiencing slow system speed or performance issue with the laptop, please check if Windows is up to date, keeping Windows updated will maintain optimum system stability and performance. It will handle basic or light editing as long as Windows and drivers are up to date. The battery life is approximately 4.5 hours of light to medium workload. In order to improve or prolong the battery charged time, please try to do a battery calibration manually. To start with, please drain it completely then charge it fully without using the system. Once fully-charged, please use the laptop, without the AC adapter connected, and drain let the battery drain completely again. Regarding the laptop not going into sleep mode when the lid is close, please configure power options in the Control Panel Power Options. While accessing web applications, please make sure the laptop has access to an established router and internet service is working properly since poor or unstable internet connectio will definitely affect system speed and performance.

If the above-mentioned steps were already performed to no avail, please try to run a diagnostics or optimization test using the "My ASUS" utility software or application. If this is not pre-installed on the laptop, please download the application at the Microsoft Store. For details on how to use "My ASUS", please go to: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1041686/. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

I have to agree with the masses. The hard drive is a done deal for any windows OS past windows 7. I bought this with the plan to immediate replace the HD with an M.2 SSD which really brought this laptop to life. Yes it is no gaming PC but it's fine for my intermediate usage. The Core i5 and 12 gb ram really help push this thing. My only complaint is the contrast between the keys and the printed symbols on the keys. In certain light and/or reflections it can be difficult to read. For this and the fact that it did not come with an SSD I took away one star. I will note that I tried it with a SATA 2.5" ssd and it also performed well. I will recommend this but ONLY if you plan on upgrading the HD to an SSD. I am luck that I can do it myself, so all it cost me is $50 for a non-gaming 1TB ssd.

For the Sale-Price of $399 apiece, Nice Laptop with large 17" Screen & 10th Gen Intel-i5 Quad-Core Processor, with 12 GB of Memory for decent performance.. In fact, I bought 2 of these Laptops, one for my wife and one for myself.. Couple of minor "downside" issues.. First, the Hard Drive is a Mechanical 1-TB HDD, spinning at 5400 RPM's, Quite Slow.. And the "Light Grey" Alpha-Numeric Characters embossed on the Silver Grey Keyboard are difficult to see.. However, with the Sale-Price being so low, I ordered two "1-TB NVMe SSD's" for the Laptops for only $90 apiece.. Cloned the HDD's over to SSD's which Improved the performance Immensely.. Overall, quite impressed with this Laptop (after adding SSD) and would highly recommend, especially when they are on Sale!!

So I have had this laptop for pver 3 years and it has been a good one for me and my family. I bought it for my son for his school work and projects. It has done its job. I recently updated the RAM and the hard drive as it was beginning to act slow. I installed a 32GB DDR4 RAM and a 1TB SATA Harddrive and this laptop is like new again. If you have this laptop just install a new ram and ssd harddrive and this laptop will be new again. This laptop will last me a good time.

This device had a standard HDD which was very slow. My frustrations were completely relieved once i replaced with a SATA SSD. In doing so i realized it also had an nvme slot as well. RAM is adequate to start and upgradable. Biggest limitations with this would be graphics and battery. A value pc.

Good value for the price; however, the laptop is slow. the display has slightly too much white light and the keyboard is difficult to read due to the lack of color contrast between the key color and symbol color - or lack thereof. The stock 1 TB hard drive is slower than expected, but probably fine for most users. The RAM is good in regard to it being 12 GB but you'll need all of that just to run windows and a few basic apps. The network card seems to be normal in its performance without any obvious problems but I did not spend enough time on this area to make a true evaluation. I cleaned up Windows by removing some of the preinstalled apps and changing some settings that are more of a resource hog rather than a true feature enhancement - fade in, fade out, etc., in settings located in the control panel. I also updated to the latest Windows 10 packs that I thought were ok - you should know if you're not into tinkering, that not all updates from the mothership are actually beneficial - Google that for more insight. I installed a new solid state drive to speed things up. Now the laptop performs. I also shopped RAM and searched for the best "timed" RAM for this motherboard and settled on Corsair that was the same spec as the replaced mod. Even though the spec didn't change, and even though the onboard memory wasn't changed, there is a noticeable improvement in performance measured with benchmarking software. Each PC/Laptop will have different results as techies will know even when the components are the same brand, model and version. So a side by side comparison will not be a good way to choose upgrades if your looking for optimal performance improvements. Be sure to research you individual components using the proper utilities (BIOS updates) to inspect your motherboard's settings and how is actually operating rather than what it is touted to be. Lastly, when it comes down to choosing Intel or AMD, do some research. I chose AMD because of the overhead factor. Each brand has its superpowers, but essentially I offer the following analogy: you can drop an apple from head height and it falls to the ground or you can drop the same apple from the same height with obstacles, or overhead, in its way. Overhead is what it takes to run the chip and AMD has less overhead. AND its less expensive.

slow, heavy, washed-out screen. I should have known better than to consider an HDD drive over a solid state. All the other specs looked good and I was hoping the 12GB of memory would help, only helps having multiple apps loaded, but the slow hard drive takes forever to load them up into memory. Also the screen is faded like worse than laptops made 15 years ago with LCD screens. I recommend anything over this laptop. Sound quality was bad too.

I’ve only had this for three weeks. What drew me to this amazing buy was: the specs. I couldn’t resist. 12GB, i5, 1TB for under $500. I bought two. The keyboard is not backlit so in less than optimal lighting, you need an alternate light source. The keys are also flimsy. How do I know this? An 8 month old infant was able to pop one off. I pushed it back in and I’ve had no problems with it- yet. The battery life is also rather questionable. On a full charge with the lowest lighting, I can’t say I’ve gotten a good hour. Finally, and the most heartbreaking, the computer lags. I’m not even doing any heavy work. I just have maybe four tabs open, a word document, and the file explorer. At this point I’m only holding on because I don’t believe I’ll find anything better. I can overlook the fact that it’s a 17 inch laptop, or that the keyboard isn’t backlit, but what can I do with a barely three week old laptop that lags? Grin and bear it? Or admit defeat and start over. It’s like a bad relationship that I’m trying desperately to revive. I can’t leave because I’ll have to admit it’s bad. I was hoping for a powerful machine, but I realize now that I may have been deceived.

I bought this for an assistant to scan and put things in different cloud programs. He is very pleased with it. The keyboard is not backlit, but he doesn't work in the dark so it isn't a problem for him. It was recommended by my computer tech person. Price was right, RAM and HD were the sizes we need. The battery is new, works fine now. For what we need, it is fast enough. My assistant likes the display. So far, so good.

Bought this laptop on sale for a customer. Specs were good for the price but there are better out there. For example the 1600x900 display resolution isn't great, the traditional HD vs SSD was a letdown, the white letters on the silver keyboard were nearly impossible to see in a dark room but for the price this was acceptable. The highs were definitely in the RAM and CPU side. 12GB of RAM and an i5 processer are good. Laptop also had a M.2 slot so I threw in a WD Black 500GB SSD there and it really released the computer's speed potential. Wish I could find another at the price I paid.

I did two things, which made a great improvement to the laptop. 1. Add a m2. 2280 NVME SSD, there is PCIe x3 slot, Samsung EVO plus 970 is a good choice (~3500 mb/s writing), which is close enough to Max 4Gb/s reading that the Pcie 3x4 could support. you can search youtube channels for demos, which show how to add/replace the SSD. After that, you would also need to "clone" all the data from HD to SSD to make SSD a booting drive. You can also search youtube for clone HD to SSD (I use AOMEI ver 6.3, following youtube). 2. Upgrade the Sodimm ram to 32GB, the loptop currently has 8GB upgradable (+4 GB soldered), you can also follow that through youtube video. (I tried cheaper Team group and G.skill CL22) they both work well,

This is just an ok laptop, when I got it, it was very slow. Being a computer guy, I purchased a 32GB ram card upgrade, and put a 1TB M.2 SSD in it and took out the junky 2.5" Toshiba mechanical hard drive, and now this thing came to life! After the upgrade this is an absolutely wonderful laptop! That's an extra $180 for the upgrade. But if your looking to buy this computer to use as is, it's just an ok laptop. Boot times (from power button push to being able to use windows on your desktop); Original HHD and RAM 14:45, After upgrade to total 36GB RAM and western digital black M.2 1TB SSD <0:05 Worth upgrading, but not that good as-is.

We do understand your disappointment if you are experiencing slow system speed or performance issue with the laptop.

Certainly, the laptop runs popular computing applications without compromising system stability and performance as long as Windows is up to date and the laptop has access to an internet service or connection that is stable while accessing web applications.
