A complete waste of money.

No luck.

Great little machine.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Love it. Small and compact, taking up less space than our previous answering machine. Easy to set and use. LOVE not having to deal with a rewinding tape. Digital speeds up replay.

This machine holds 60 minutes of messages. Import
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good product. Set up isn't immediately intuitive, but if you heed the manual you'll be fine. I still have an old but very functional business phone system from the mid 1990s and a lot of old fashioned but quite nice wired phones everywhere in my loft, that you can intercom or conference among and use as extensions, which all still work fantastically so far as I'm concerned. To improve that box with enterprise level answering machine functionality at this point would be prohibitively expensive. But—just plug this sweet little item into one of the many phone jacks I'd had installed at vast expense right before wireless came to be—and it serves my whole system for just $15! Fantastic! When digital overtook cassette, the amount of recording time was annoyingly limited to 15 or 22 minutes—and this state of affairs persisted for decades. You wanted more? You had to pony up for a whole new, quite expensive "business" system. The answering machines on new cordless home phones STILL limit you to 14-22 minutes. It's only right now that the 1730 gives you a full 60 minutes. FINALLY! My old 1728 (still functioning well) held 22. That was the longest you could get on a standalone answering machine a decade or more ago when we replaced a minicassette machine. I know, because I'd shopped hard for more time. No dice. I wanted more time because we'd typically had friends and clients who'd often leave long, fascinating messages on tape. So much so, we always used full sized 90-minute cassettes in order to save poignant moments, even, on occasion, actual works of art, as some creative types liked to play radio producer with their phone messages back in the 80s. At one point, we also recorded death threats from Act Up and Moveon.org concerning certain books that we'd sold, telling truth to power, that they didn't happen to like. Alas, this method of random historical record-keeping has now been made obsolete, or at least not without a lot of effort and/or consultancy expense on my part. The telephone industry seems to have wanted to force us all into centralized services in order to build out the total surveillance state. And, over the decades, it has clearly succeeded with that. So consider buying this sweet little item if only as a small nostalgic strike back against Big Brother. I assume a freestanding answering machine is harder for Big Brother to tap than Rudy Giuliani's iCloud, anyway.

OK for what ti does,
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Now that it's set up it seems to work OK. Some of the setup instructions as written were confusing, but the unit gave audible instructions that were clear. If I pick up the phone after the welcome message has started there is a lot of feedback, and also the machine keeps recording the incoming call.

For the $$ it is worth it
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted an answer machine to avoid using the phone companies, and I didn't want to replace my 4 wireless phones. I've had this for nearly 2 months and it has worked fine. It is cheap in quality though and a bit funny. You can set the "day of the week" and the year but you can not set a date. I.E. You can set it as Monday at 1PM but you can't give it a date. Very strange but as I won't be going weeks without picking up my messages it doesn't matter to me. As for the feature that reads out the telephone number for incoming calls I found that annoying and turned the feature off. It is easier, quieter/more private, and nicer just to look at the caller ID.

Gets stuck and can't be reset. To the trash can!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had three AT&T 1740 answerers fail over the years with the problem of it getting stuck with the number of messages blinking and there being no way to clear the messages or continue to use the device. This problem has been reported for years in customer reviews, but it appears that AT&T does not want to fix it. There is nothing that the user can do to reset the unit. There is no Reset or Clear button and unplugging it, then plugging it back in, does not reset it. My next to last unit failed in less than a year. AT&T replaced it under warranty (costing me $11 to mail the old unit), but then within a year the replacement unit failed.
