Useful For Airbnb - Major Drawbacks

    Posted
    Ne10

If you own an Airbnb that’s an ADU or you have a semi-private entrance, August is an absolute requirement. It interfaces with Airbnb and will automatically set the guest up in the lock with access that matches their stay exactly and sends them an email with instructions. This is such an enormous time saver and adds so much security to the house, I really cannot understate how important it has been to my Airbnb. With all of that said. August has some major drawbacks when upgrading. My first lock was a Gen 1. 80% of guests had no issue entering and exiting. But when I added the August Keypad ($59) for the 20% that didn’t like using the app, I found out that I would need to upgrade the lock to use temporary codes for guests. I was annoyed, but I liked the system, so I upgraded to a Gen 3 lock ($149). After I upgraded, I hit my next issue, there is no way to transfer lock information from one lock to another. That means I had to contact all 30 of my upcoming guests and re-register them manually in the new lock one by one. Then, when I connected Airbnb to the new lock I got another surprise, temporary codes can’t be automatically sent to new guests unless you also have the August WiFi Connect device which costs an additional $79. By adding a keypad which I thought it would be a quick $60 upgrade to fix a common guest problem. It ended up being nearly $300 and hours of setup work contacting annoyed guests to join a brand new system. We’re all of these upgrades and hassle worth it? $290 is a LOT to ask for a properly functioning keypad system that allows guests to get temporary codes. But now that it is set up, I am very happy with it and it saves a lot of hassle for guests who don’t understand tech. The guests seem to be much happier too. I also like the fact that it knows when the door is open. So if a guest leaves it slightly open, I get an alert. That is super useful and was not available on the Gen 1 lock. I use the same door as guests do to access my part of the house and I have to admit that I really like the Auto Unlock feature. It makes taking groceries in much easier. The batteries that came with the unit died after just 1 day. I had more batteries, but I don’t think the batteries it came with were insulated well at the factory. The Gen 3 unit is also much louder than the Gen 1 model. When Gen 3 opens and closes, it has a loud mechanical whirring/grinding sound and no sound indication that it is open or closed. It is also made in China compared to Gen 1 which was made in the United States. Aside from these flaws, Gen 3 has all metal parts which is really nice for a high use door and it does recognize commands faster than Gen 1.

I purchased this because I didn't want this on wifi immediately and it uses your existing keys, so your not needing a new lock/key. Your are simply replacing the back part of your lock. The lock uses bluetooth and the smallest interference causes the lock not to sync. I have a smart watch and bluetooth in my car so it would take 2-5min after I was standing at the door to actually unlock. Sometimes it wouldn't even sync until I powered off my car. I purchased the wifi module and this challenge became finding a plug closest to the front door. I say try to get it within 3ft. I tested it from 1ft to 5ft using an extension cord. At 4ft I started to experience lag sync which occurred about 3 out 10 times. And if my wife and I showed up together it took a little longer to sync (4ft and 5ft). I tested each distance for 2 days and the best, in my current home network setup, was 3ft or less. After testing, I decided to make my own wall outlet and put it about 1ft from the lock. This made the lock work awesome. Now the lock works like it should. By the time we get to the driveway, the lock is already in the process of syncing and starts the unlocking. Now that the lock is on wifi, we are able to unlock the door when we are away from the house. Other features include granting permission to other people to download the app and allowing them to use their mobile. This does work with Alexa as well. I would only recommend this if you also purchase the wifi module and can keep it fairly close. My friend has his wifi module at 5ft, but he also uses wifi extenders, so it could be possible to keep it that far. To sum up, I like that this doesn't require to replace your existing lock and keys; I recommend buying the wifi module and depending on your home network 1ft to 5ft distance from the lock. 5 stars if you go buy module and keep it close, 2.5 stars if you just use the lock.

I purchased the Gen 2 in the past and fell in love with August products ever since. I'm familiar with August products and know how wonderful their locks are. If you're experiencing any problems, check for updates in your cellphone app store. August releasing a lot of updates lately and things are improving. Especially the auto unlock feature. I love the simplicity of the new design. Only thing missing is the beep when it lock/unlock like the Gen 2 version, lol. The motor inside of the lock is strong. It's louder than the Gen 2 version when locking and unlocking. But it doesn't bother me and seem to be jammed less often than the previous models. Depends on which cellphone you using. Things are easier for iOS devices than Android devices. You need to purchase Google Home to lock it via voice. But you're not going to be able to lock with your voice. That's only for Apple device users. Plus you doesn't need to buy additional devices to do so. I recommend the keypad with these smart locks. People hate downloading the August app. Guess I know a bunch of lazy people, lol.

Great Lock for a Smart Home

I purchased this lock, because we only have one key for our front door. We are constantly coming and going, and only one person is able to have the key at a time. It is inconvenient to not have the key and need to come in at the middle of the night, leaving someone else to stay up to let them in. With this lock, they can simply whip out their phone and unlock it, leaving us peace of mind that people can come and go as they need to without leaving the door unlocked. The installation could not have been simpler. It took me and my mom maybe 10 minutes to get it installed, and neither of us have ever installed a lock before. The only complaint I have with the installation is my fault. I didn't tighten the mounting plate enough, and the lock will sometimes slightly move as it locks and unlocks. However, I do rest knowing that it is indeed secure and will not fall off. One other complaint: It is not quiet. I can be in my room towards one end of the house and hear it as it locks and unlocks. This isn't necessarily a bad thing if you have kids and want to know if they're sneaking in in the middle of the night, but it can be annoying at times. However, it is not enough of an inconvenience to knock off a star. Overall, this is a great lock with a simple to use app and simple install process.

    Great Smart Lock!

I purchased this smart lock as a way to lock the front door of my apartment, which is often left unlocked by my forgetful roommates. My apartment already had a lock installed (a Kaba Saflok deadbolt lock), but I was able to install this lock on the back of my existing lock without a problem. Instead of using the included screws to mount the mounting plate to the back of the door, I used an industrial strength 3M adhesive strip to avoid having to drill holes into the Kaba rear access plate. The lock fit perfectly and has worked perfectly since I put it in! The only complaint that I have regarding this lock is that August did not include wifi or z wave functionality in the lock itself like it does with the bulkier August Pro lock. They do make a Wifi bridge, which I purchased along with this lock, but it does not provide a consistent user experience. It suffers from poor connectivity and high latency times. Other than that, it has been the perfect compliment to my smart home setup! My favorite feature is the auto unlock hands down! I haven't needed to manually unlock my door since the day I installed it back in January!

Great, only with the Wireless HUB

I made a separate review for the hub. So you can check that out over there. As for the smart lock. It has great features and I enjoy it very much. That is only with the expensive hub. luckily I got them on sale and paid as much as just one Smart lock Price. Anywho, As for the smart lock, it is only really good with the smart hub. Without it, you are missing features such as notifications of when the door is locked/unlocked if the door is open/closed, and for registered users that you add in you can see who does the aforementioned features above. But without the hub its only smart within a few feet of the door where you will be waiting to connect to the Bluetooth. You can open our door manually faster than you could open it with your phone. Would I recommend it? Yes and No Yes with the Hub to get all the great features that the smart lock has. And no without the Hub. It is pretty useless without the hub.

August smart lock was easy to install and simple to set up. It functions perfectly with the app to unlock my doors on arrival and re-lock the doors behind me. I'm a groggy morning person, so the peace of mind knowing that I *did* remember to lock the door this morning is worth it. It also payed off in other ways: letting in the plumber was easy when there was an emergency leak and the app let us know that our pet sitter wasn't coming while we were on vacation, so we were able to arrange another sitter from 1000 miles away AND let her in and out without having to get her keys. There's a million little ways that smart locks are handy -- and these locks do the job. CONS: If you have and use multiple doors, you'll need a hub for each lock -- it would be great if multiple locks could work off the same hub, but sadly that's not the case. Similarly, auto-unlock only works on one door per phone... if you're like me and have a vestibule/patio door to get through before the front or back door, I still have to unlock one of them manually -- I use the August keypad to stay key-free.

The lock is very nice and feels well built. The installation was very easy. The August app does a good job with the videos and tutorials they provide for installation. We use the Auto Unlock and auto lock features. We have not had a problem with the lock not unlocking upon approaching it. We have been using the lock for over a month now and I have not needed to use my keys. I did not install the door sense sensor because I did not want to have it sticking out of the wall and didn’t want to put another hole in the door frame. Maybe it would serve more of a purpose for somebody with kids. The only reason for 4 stars is the motors in the lock are quite loud. You can hear it from outside the door. I did not expect it. It also makes a sound after the lock is locked or unlocked that sounds like the motor is trying to over work. I have to look into this.

I like that I can walk up to the door and it unlocks for me as im driving up my driveway. its wonderful. the reason it only got 4 stars is bc u can't have 2 locks automatically open and u have to buy a bridge for every lock u buy. I have 2 on my front door now and only one can be set up at a time to auto unlock as I drive in. so now I have to pull out my phone so I can unlock the 2nd lock on my front door. ANNOYING!!! also, it was difficult to set up Alexa to open the door lock when I added the 2nd lock. don't be fooled, u can't just add whatever name u want to the door for her to open it. customer service hadn't had this problem before so it took us a while to realize Alexa can only understand a few choices. door and back door are easy for her to understand. customer service gets 5 stars and they answer the phone quickly.

The August lock is great because it fits over your existing lock which is really convenient. However it can be a little slow. It's generally always faster just to pull out your keys. If you get the WiFi Bridge to go with it works much better. If you have it set to auto unlock when you get home it can be much faster than pulling out your keys but Auto Unlock doesn't always work. The lock says it works with Google assistant which is technically true but you have to confirm a pin every time you want to lock the door so it's always more convenient to just use the app. Overall we like using it better than using our physical keys but it's not really much more convenient. It be great if you have guest though but we don't have those so we haven't been able to test that.

As the title says you have a 50-50 chance on whether this lock will open or close when you want it to. When it works you feel like a VIP coming into your own home as the door surrenders to you as you approach granting you access. Then there are those times where you don't have much of a choice but to either pull out your hard key and go old school on your lock to manually open it or go through the hassle of pulling your phone out of your pocket, unlocking your phone, starting the app, going to the section where you stick your finger on the big round button making it unlock the door for you. At this point it's a bit of a gimmick and not worth the money until they perfect it where you can at least get it to work 90% of the time consistently.

Works fine using the app directly to unlock and lock the door. but my main desire when i purchased this was that it would automatically unlock the door for me when i arrived home. and maybe less then 50% it does. in the worst case it will decide to unlock the door after i've already manually unlocked the door and locked it behind me! that is not fun. surprisingly it will do this as well if you unlock the door with the phone as whenever the geolocation tips, it doesn't seem to have any memory that you just opened it... otherwise it is fine and the installation was fine. i do wish this version included the z wave support. I also have the wifi bridge installed and that did not improve the auto unlock functionality.

    Auto unlock is unreliable

Auto unlock worked for a few days with my phone and it took me a few days to get to work with my wife's phone. Since then it works when it wants, it may work for 2-3 days and then it will not work for a week. Other times I may come home and be in the driveway for 5 minutes then it will unlock the lock. I did a complete reset, completely reset the connection device and it is a straight shot 4 feet away from the lock. We have a strong wifi signal and it is still very finicky. I have replaced the batteries and I am hoping that may help out but I do not have high hopes for it. using the app it works fine every time it is just the auto unlock feature.

I bought this smart lock because I liked the "door sense" feature, which automatically locks your door when you leave and unlocks it when you are in proximity of your house. However, it almost NEVER worked, even after I tried recallibrating the lock several times and performed a factory reset. I even bought the August Connect wifi bridge, thinking it might help improve performance, but it did nothing. In fact, after getting the bridge, Google Assistant never worked to lock/unlock the door and I wasn't able to access the lock settings over WiFi. In the end, I returned both the smart lock and the wifi bridge and went back to a standard deadbolt.

I give this a 5 star review, as the item works as it is advertised, I live in an apartment, and when I get to the front door it unlocks automatically, works excellent with google home, sharing the access works flawlessly, and 30 seconds after I leave it locks automatically. There is one down side, you pay all this money for the mechanism not for a lock, plus I had to get the hub for it to work with Google home, when everything should be integrated, it is cheaper to purchase this model and the hub separately then the round lock with the hub you can save around $70. My apartment is now smart on all the things I have, if you want it smart you can get this and it will work beautifull.

I purchased this item since I see its advantage over competitor that it has an ability to open door when our phone approaches the door. While the smartlock works flawlessly in remote lock mode, sometimes, it didn’t open the door until I stand in front of the door, pull out my phone just to get it even closer to the lock (the lock is on the inner side of the door). But, it worked fine a few dozen times so I think it just need a firmware upgrade instead of a major change. In addition, the algorithm to never unlock the door while we are home is super. If there’s a 4.8 star, I will not hesitate to give them that.

The lock itself is good to great. Minimal fuss to install. Fit well with original deadbolt. But the app could use some work. Tried to get my wife included on her smartphone but no deal just a text sent enter the code then back to original page. Every update means the lock will not auto open all the time, maybe %85. The user interface could also be improved. The keychain page needs to be opened by touching the stripe that says xxx’s house. I didn’t figure that out at first. I am hoping that the app will improve with time as I do like the lock a lot.

Slowly but surely I have been converting my home to a smart home. I recently purchased this lock because I wanted to avoid the dreaded locking myself out situation. I also liked the idea of sending virtual keys to guests that I can have expire whenever I want. So far I can not complain about this product. It has functioned as expected without hiccups. I would have liked a model with built-in wifi capabilities but that would have been the icing on the cake. A big plus for me was I did not have to change the exterior lock hardware so only I know there is a smart lock lurking behind the door.

We purchased the lock so we could let in a dog walker while on vacation without needing to give them a key. It worked perfectly for that and she had no problems gaining access while we were gone. The app is very clean and simple and most importantly, it works all the time. The Auto Unlock feature when arriving home has been another unexpected highlight. I spent quite awhile trying to understand the difference between this and the more expensive August “pro” and didn’t see much call for the price delta as this unit does everything we would ask of a smart lock.

I live in the city and hate carrying keys everywhere I walk. I bought this specifically to use with Bluetooth and have been happy so far. Took about fifteen mins to get installed and running. The app is very straight forward and the sending a "key" by text works well. It does have some connectivity issues at times. But only when I'm outside and not close enough to the door. Hardly enough to complain about. The auto lock feature works perfectly set at thirty secs. For an entry level product it's perfectly fine.
