Actually lives up to the hype

The game is incredible in almost every way, but not without some small flaws.
The storyline flows very well and plays out like a dystopian sequel to Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged.
Gameplay is very fun and the world of Rapture is detail rich and packed with things to explore.
Your weapon set include standard pistols, grenade launchers, etc but the real fun is in the plasmids. These are genetic enhancements that give you superhuman powers.
As mentioned, the game isn't as flawless as it's been hyped. Death gives you absolutely no penalty, making the game rather easy if you're willing to engage in a war of attrition with a big daddy, respawning as you defeat him bit by bit.
There are also some widescreen display issues.
I'm also not fond of the fact that it's been found that later on you'll be able to buy new plasmids on the Xbox Live Marketplace. I just don't like the idea for paying to unlock things on the disc I've already bought for $60.
All in all it's a must have.

I ordered this game after hearing multiple comments on it praising it over the past year counting it came I two years ago I believe. When I first started it, the storyline of it already got me in and welcome to the underwater utopia of Rapture. With a basic tutorial near beginning, I was ready to play through. The game includes various weapons from revolvers to grenade launches. You also have plasmids, which are genetic modifications that allow to to create fire, electricity, ect. out of your hands and to inflect enemies. As you play through the storyline, you meet characters that you grow to hate or to trust which attaches you. The gameplay controls are basic and normal for usual First-Player Shooters which is a good thing unlike other games where it confuses players. The graphics are overall stunning and filled with detail and effort. While not explorable in this game, you can look outside the walls of Rapture into the ocean that surrounds it for beautiful scenery. The enemies range from genetic mutated humans called Splicers, to enormous creatures called Big Daddies which are sworn to protect Little Sisters, orphaned little girls that have been altered by the stem cell ADAM which is a huge concept of the main story. To truthfully say, the only thing people might dislike about this game is that there is no multiplayer, but seriously, it's supposed to be a single player game and I don't think a multiplayer mode would work very well with this game although it was added in the sequel, Bioshock 2. Basically, it's a game that should be atleast bough for 20$, which is a great deal for a amazing game like this by 2K. A must buy for all serious gamers.

Bioshock is impressive. From the moment you first see the city of Rapture you wll know this game has alot to offer. Rapture itself was designed with incredible detail and with top notch graphics making it fun to explore. The controls are easy to use and the game has a nice flow to it.
I was very impressed with the games voice acting. It really brought the whole story to life and never left me asking myself, and why am I killing these guys again?
The only unfortunate problem with this game is it is a bit short. Also, some people find it too easy because you really can't die. Well, that is when you die you reappear at a vital station with a portion of your life back. If you return to the enemy that killed you, his life will still be diminished to the point where you got it down so this makes fighting bosses a piece of cake. You can always increase the difficulty to make it more challenging if you feel your getting by to easily.
Overall, this game is very addicting and incredibly fun to play. Highly recommended.

This game is all around amazing. It has everything that makes games great, I've said this 3 times now so I will finally explain. It has amazing graphics as expected, but what I didn't expect was the amazing universe that this game created. It was eriee how real it made the universe seem. The story was increadable with characters and twists that really brought you into the game. The controls are some of the best I've seen in a FPS, and the plasmids add whole new level to the uniqueness to this game. Overall there isn't anything you could ask for from a video game that Bioshock doesn't deliver on. For $29.99 I fell like I'm stealling, because this game is worth more more more.

This game is quickly climbing up the charts on my personal "best of" list.
A couple of weeks ago, it was in the top 10, but now(the more I think of it) it's easily in my top 5.
The most stirking thing about this game is the arresting atmosphere. There's not a second that went by that I didn't feel like I was absorbed in an underwater world that had gone horribly wrong. The game made me feel like the world would have gone on whether or not I had been there to be a part of it.
I would sometimes just sit hidden in a place a watch the characters go about their business and carry on programmed conversations. Fascinating.
This was due to some fantastic personality coding, whic brings me to some other great coding.......the A.I.
No fight happens the same way in this game. You could play the game 10 times annd have a different experience with the battles every time, not to mention the added difference of how you interact within those fights through various modifications to your genetics through the use of Plasmids and Tonics.
The graphics are also nothing to scoff at at this game. It is still one of the best looking titles to come out for the system after significantly more than a year after it's release. Even on a standard definition tv this game is a joy to behold.
I absolutely recommend this game at ful price, but seeing as it has recently gone down in price, it is a genuine bargain.
I believe I'm going to go play some more tonight. :)
ENJOY!

The Next Great FPS

This is by far one of the best first person shooters I have ever played. From the art deco themes to the crafty and intelligent story which will keep you hooked right up until the very end to the highly intense confrontations with the city's inhabitants, it all makes you feel as though you are actually ALIVE within the game world. The plasmid system (chemical injections that give you sepcial abilites such as freezing enemies or setting them on fire with a wave of your hand) really adds a cool dynamic to what would otherwise be just an above average shooter. The enemy a.i. in the game is likewise really well developed, and some enemy encounters literally made me jump a little since again this game has such a realistic and believable feel to it. So, in short, whether you're looking for the next great first person shooter or you're just looking to have some gory fun blasting bad guys with old school weapons in a fantastical underwater setting, look no further than Bioshock, a new masterpiece to add to the wondrous history of videogames.

After such a long drought of no great games for the 360, this was definitely a thirst quencher. The atmosphere and set design of the game is outstanding. The game play itself is fantastic. Don't let any of that news about the widescreen FOV issue stop you. It's nothing. For a FPS it's a lot more than that. The way you can create new weapons and using plasmids like spells It's borderline RPG which helps crave that need as well (although I still can't wait for a good full RPG). This game is definitely worth the buy. The first of many exciting new titles coming out.

Awesome Story, So-so gameplay

Playing this game is like watching a movie, and a really great movie at that. It really makes you think, and there are many twists and turns to keep you at bay. As for the gameplay, this is your standard FPS. You get standard retro weapons, like a revolver and tommy gun. You also get these super powers called "plasmids" that lets you light things up on fire, freeze, electrocute, etc. Nonetheless, the FPS fare is a great one. The controls are very smooth. The AI is also pretty good, although I wish there were more variations of enemies; the variety is rather bland. You can finish this game within 24 hours, even if you take your sweet time. Graphically, this game is superior to any current title with its utilization of Unreal 3 engine. If you love FPS and great stories, this game is for you. I recommend renting it, especially since the more popular games (ie. Halo 3) will be coming out, but that's just me.

A Respite from the Norm

Let's get one thing straight from the beginning: Bioshock is not a particularly difficult game. No enemy will re-spawn when you die and your money and items remain intact even when you don't. Although it may take you a couple of weeks to get through, you will get through it without frustration.
That said, Bioshock is a wonderful ride for those couple of weeks you become immersed in the world of Rapture. The graphics, audio, and original soundtrack are breathtaking. The story leaves nothing to be desired and you will find yourself emotionally attached to the various characters you encounter.
Because the game is so unique you will find yourself wanting to go back and put together the story all over again to catch the missing pieces from the first time around. In addition, and without giving anything away, there are different endings to the game depending on decisions you make as you play.

My favorite X-Box 360 game

I bought this game and let it sit in my house for a month or two before I played it. I read good reviews about it, and I thought it looked good. When I finally picked it up to play, I was blown away by it within the first 3 minutes of the game. The graphics were great and the sound was intense on my surround sound system. At times I felt like I was actually in the game. The game is highly addicting and I found it hard to put down. Best of all it has a story line that you can get into. It is very well thought out and has many twists and surprises.
The only flaw I had with the game is that the action got so intense at times than my system could not handle it and the game got choppy. After a few seconds it returned to normal. This is very minor though considering the totality of this game. My only regret in purchasing this was that I did not play it sooner. I can't wait for Bioshock 2.

Easily should win Game of the Year. Graphics are top notch using the Unreal3 engine (gears of war). Sound seriously helps set the mood and atmosphere, get a surround system if you dont have one.Great story and gameplay. Sure you can run through it but the point is to explore and upgrade.
Play the demo if you want to try it, but it's def a must buy.

It took a little while for me to get into Bioshock when I first started playing it. The gameplay felt a little slow and muddled at first. It just didn't 'feel' right. But I gave it a chance, and I'm glad I did.
Bioshock is was one of the all-around best games to be released so far for the current generation of video games. It has a story that immediately grabs you and stays interesting for the entire time you play it. Another high point of Bioshock is the art direction; it is next-to-perfect. The underwater city of Rapture is so cool, I'm a little sad I can't go there myself.
The whole concept of how Rapture works has been planned and laid out very well, and it is incorporated into the core gameplay amazingly well.
Your survival to the later stages of the game depends on your ability to acquire ADAM, the "genetic currency" of Rapture. The only way to get ADAM is to find Little Sisters, small girls with large syringes who wander around looking to extract ADAM from corpses. Each Little Sister is protected, however, by a Big Daddy, one of whom is pictured on the game box. You have to kill the Big Daddy to get to the Little Sister, and they do not go down without a fight. Once you get ADAM, you use it to purchase genetic upgrades (called plasmids) for yourself, which you will need to progress through the game.
The characters, items, weapons, and the entire package of Bioshock make it a truly great game. Anyone into first-person shooters, action/adventure, and horror owes it to themselves to at least try it.

Biosock will SHOCK & AWE you! I got goose bumps and the heeby geebies so many times. The gameplay is awesome and the story line is top notch with great voice-overs and creepy sound effects. I have not felt this way playing a game since the 1st Resident Evil, only in this game you get spooked so much more.
The graphics are truly impressive, the game play is exciting and challenging and the sound is bar-non.
This game is a 1st person shooter with so much more to offer. There are so many different combinations of ways to defeat your foes that it never gets monotonous. Your imagination and creativity using objects in the environment will add to the amusement as well.
I highly recommend this game and you will not be disappointed.

I won't go into much detail with this game since countless articles, reviews, and blogs have been written about it. I will say that in the months leading up to this game's release I wasn't interested in it at all and thought it would be a huge failure. That all changed when I played the demo. I enjoyed it so much I went out and bought it and proceeded to beat it 4 times within a few months. It is incredibly well done, from graphics and physics to story and light-RPG elements like uprading your weapons. It really is a masterpiece of video game storytelling and the presentation is near perfect. Bioshock is a unique and involving masterpiece that simply needs to be experienced by any hardcore gamer.

BioShock is the trendsetter for years to come. Games from now on will be compared to BioShock. This game delivers when it comes to graphics, storyline, and gameplay. The graphics are just stunning. Whether you are looking out the window at the underwater city or in the middle of a fight, it is visually stunning. The storyline just grabs you and won't let go. Since this is a horror game, you never know quite what to expect in the next room. The gameplay is solid. In combat, your environment gives a lot of options with dealing with the enemy. The AI is intelligent and gives a pretty good fight. If you love gaming and own a 360, you must buy this, no question about it.

This is one of the best games that I have ever played. Bioshock has superb graphics and is also very easy to control/ play. It also, surprisingly, has a great story line which you usually don't find much of in video games. Play it and look out for the twist. The music and the sound of this game are outstanding. The makers created a perfect playing atmosphere. The Loading time in between screens is very short compared to other games which is a big plus so you don't have to sit around and twiddle your thumbs forever.
The only downside of Bioshock is that the game itself could be longer but maybe I just feel that way because I was having such a good time playing it.

Game of the Year material

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Bioshock represents years of pining by "cerebral gamers" to get a game that's finally both fun AND features an intelligent story with smart gameplay. After System Shock 2 was released to fantastic reviews but lukewarm sales, it started to seem as though developers were shying away from similar design fearing that it might be too highbrow for the gaming audience, but Bioshock bucks that trend by becoming one of the year's most well received and best SELLING games out there.
Bioshock is, at its heart, an FPS with a sci-fi twist on magic abilities. Set in an underwater city during the late 60's, it features a host of genetically altered people, and a rock solid story that is told through the use of audio players and a mic system connected to some of the game's main characters (complete with old-time static for extra audio goodness). The game also features an pseudo RPG-lite setup, and allows you to sort of create a character that fits your gameplay style, which goes well with the fact that the game also features multiple endings and multiple paths for winning. The levels aren't necessarily open-ended, but the solutions to problems ARE, which makes for some incredibly varied gameplay, as well as something that will draw you back into giving the game's 20+ hours another play through.
The game isn't perfect. There are a lot of complaints about lack of penalty for dying (you get revived automatically at no charge, and the damage you've dealt to characters remains), and the story can get confusing... especially during the first play through. But don't let the stop you from getting the game. At its heart, this is as much an interactive story as it is a game, and the ease of beating the title doesn't deter from the fact that it's one of the greatest gaming experiences to come along in years.
If you like your games mindless and fast and furious, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you want a little more depth to your games, and a good story that you can walk away from feeling satiated, you're not going to find a better game than this one. From atmosphere, to graphics, to gameplay, to story, this is the perfect example of a AAA title, and shouldn't be missed.

Bio shock being one of the games with a good amount of hype delivered what was promised. Great gameplay, story, graphic etc... When i first heard of Bioshock and that 2K games were the makers I laughed. I mean the same makers of "Hour of Victory" trying to make another game. But it was really the demo that changed my mind. The fact that there are many different ways to play the game (plus that no one else will play the same way) really caught my attention. many challenges plus smart A.I. make up for not having a online gameplay (sorry multiplayer fanatics). I can say that Bioshock deserves a nominee for game of the year but only time will tell...

This is definitly one of the best games ever. It's well worth whatever you pay for it. The story is in-depth and interesting, the voice acting is flawless, and the graphics are unbelievable. The water physics are the best I've ever seen, and the levels are detailed. The story is really easy to get into, and i recommend playing it in the dark for added effect, becuse it's kinda creepy at times. The only flaw is the person's hands look kinda weird. It has awesome features like gene-modifying, and you can do stuff like shoot fire and use telekenisis...sort of like the gravity gun from Half Life.
I would totally recommend this game to anyone.

Bioshock is an absolutely amazing and original game. The originality is unparalleled and game play is so much fun. The controls needing to use your weapons in conjunction with your plasmids for a successful attack adds to the skill of the game and strategy needed to imobilize and attack an enemy. It has a creepy setting that gives playing a whole new feel. The storyline is amazing with having to travel all overthe underwater world to come out alive. becareful with the controls you can use health capsules and energy capsules even if your at full health/energy. Buy this game you will not be sorry it is phenominal.
