As this system doesn't process a video signal, you should use a standard audio connection (digital coaxial, optical or RCA) as opposed to an HDMI signal. We wanted a really good sound and bass that the TV did not offer. We did NOT want a lot of speakers to take up space and clutter the living room. That being said, this is NOT a surround sound system, if that's what you are looking for. You are not getting hit by sound and bass from every direction, although it does feel like it at times. Our living room is about a 15'X25' rectangular area, and this system produces more than enough sound and bass to fill it. The subwoofer vibrates so much that every so often (once a month on hard floors) I need to pick it up and move it back to it's spot because it starts to run away (and it has rubber inserts under the legs). This system gives you a whole new experience. Watching normal TV, like watching your normal news anchors, you'll be surprised at how much clearer their voices come through and how much bass normal TV programs actually have. Watching movies like Saving Private Ryan, you'll feel like your right there on the beach...almost. This is my first sound system. I'm a normal person, and not an overly critical sound guru. So, take it for what it's worth...but we're really happy with it and would definitely buy it again if we needed another.
