This is a decent zoom lens, but not spectacular. I would go with an EF 70-200 instead

Teh lens price point is good however the rotating manual focus ring is an issue and I found it to always be in may front support hand when focusing. I did not like this and would not recommend this lens due to that feature.

Canon middle entry USM - IS lense 70-300mm

Canon 70-300mm F4-5.6 IS lens. First things to point out this is an EF lens and it will work with all Canon SLR cameras. The actual weight of this lens is 630 grams and is not that heavy, the actually body of this lens is made of plastic. Also this lens has differed function : - Autofocus and Manual focus - Image Stabilizer to switch between 1 or 2 mode - Zoom lock button to prevent the lens creep - Max Aperture on this lens is F4-5 to 5-6 if you want a lens with a bigger Aperture mode you may need to look into Canon L series lenses. - This lens is quick and quiet focus that is because it has a cam USM ring motor. If your budget is low do to a bad economy TAMRON and SIGMA ( ...with a Macro function built in ) are half the price compared with this baby but without IS. Overall the Canon 70-300mm is an excellent lens and take sharp pictures it has a quick and quiet mechanism...Thanks to Canon USM ring motor. The image stabilization is an excellent bonus taking pictures at low light and when its zoomed at 300mm. Its more expensive then TAMRON and SIGMA but is less versatile it does not have the Macro built in. But then again if you into Macro photography you may need to buy a dedicated lenses for that purpose.

Great lens for bringing far off objects up close.

I read several reviews and looked at multiple lenses before I decided on this lens. My budget did not allow for L series lenses. What sold me was the USM. Focusing is super fast compared to other lenses. Picture quality is superb and the image stabilizer is a big plus. I was able to get some great close ups while on vacation with this lens that I would not have been able to get with my 18-55 standard lens. Great for candid shots of family. Not a lens you would use as your everyday lens - a little heavy and your limited as to how close you can get. I am looking forward to using this lens for years to come. A great second lens for your camera.

    It's Canon; enough said

Nice quality pictures. Fast auto focus. It's heavy to carry around at an all day event (i.e. track meet) would use my smaller camera unless I had a caddy :) Pricey. Have a Canon powershot sx20is 18-100mm non-SLR (love this camera). I made the jump to an SLR for the 300 mm capabilities. Looking at some nature shots, birds. Have to say I'm disappointed. I loved my sx20, there isn't much difference in my capabilities. I should have gone with a larger mm. Live & learn. The expense is a little scary, live in fear of dropping it. At the end of the day you're getting a Canon, it lives up to it's name, but weigh your options carefully.

Great for son's little league baseball games

This lense is great for action shots, especially my son's baseball games. we can capture him almost at any place in the field and still get great photos. We use it with a new Canon 60D in sports mode and the results were outstanding. Only problem is that it is very bulky and almost 12in when you zoom to 300mm. Camera can be very heavy when you use the neck strap that comes with it. Other than that, the lense is a great buy.

Buy Canon OR waste your Money

I purchased this lens in the SIGMA brand. I shot photos with the SIGMA @ my friends sons football game. I changed to my Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and snapped a few. I could not believe the difference. I immediately ordered the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM from Best Buy. I shot photos of my friend's sons football game yesterday in the drizzle. HUGE difference. Actually no comparison. Do Not waste your money on anything but Canon. Save your money until you can purchase the Canon lens you want. I love this lens. I was 100-125 yards away and you can see his mouth, his eyes, the laces on his shoes. My son plays baseball this weekend and I can't wait to snap shots of him. In case you think Lens Filters are a waste of money - NOT! Purchase a UV Filter and a Polorarizer. You will not regret the money spent.

The lens is amazing. The image stabilizer definatly helps clean up your shots. Also the lens can be locked at 70mm to prevent from sliding out. I was debating between this lens, and the 28-135 IS lens, but i choose this lens over it mainly for the longer zoom. I cant wait to take it out for some real shooting. I reccommend getting an external flash to go with this considering most canon bodies only cover 12 feet of flash.

The IS feature is worth it.

I've had the non IS version of this lens for over twenty years. It took great pictures to the level of moderate cropping. I printed very few pictures larger than 11X14 and was satisfied. Introduce a t3i and 18 megapixels; add a 1.6 multiplier and I now have a supposed 480mm lens. I was disappointed with my results and purchased the IS version and was pleasantly surprised. I understand it is not an upper level Canon lens. Even with a tripod and a dropped shutter, there is is fuzziness and chromatic aberrations. For less extreme and moderately cropped shots, it does a really good job. My friends and colleagues are asking me for prints all the time. My range of use is extended as compared to my older lens.

I have this as well as the 28-135 that came with the camera. This is a great addition if you do any outdoor wildlife work. It has also worked great at car shows. I would highly recommend this lense. Fast focus and IS is a worth it.

I used this lense right away. I was taking photos of my daughter for homecoming on the football field. The photos came out great even though she was far away from the stands. I was able to get close up shots like a pro!

    Great telephoto lens so far

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this lens with the Canon EOS 60D body. This is my first telephoto lens, and I've been happy with it, but I am new to the DSLR world and still getting my legs under me. I've taken a few pics with the telephoto lens, mostly back-of-the-room shots of school programs that turned out great, even in fairly low light (still learning ISO settings on the camera). Also took a few nature/bird shots that turned out nice. Online reviews of the lens showed it has a slight vignette effect in the corners of the image at full zoom, but not enough to be a big deal for me as a newbie (I probably would not have even noticed if I had not seen the online reviews). Better lenses that address that issue were out of my price range. All things considered, it's a great lens to start out with!

Outstanding telephoto zoom for the price. Pictures are sharp. Combines excellent optics with a light and easy to use design. Best to use in daylight or use a tripod in limited light conditions.

I have two other lenses for my EOS 7D. This lens remains on my camera all the time, I find it to be the most versatile for nature shots and to capture those 'people' shots unaware. Love the 'image stabilizer' feature too.

Good IS, not the most sharp pictures

The best part of the lens is the Image Stabilization. It works great and I was able to get some good pictures in a poorly light stage show without using a tripod. Picture quality is good but not great as compared to the similarly priced 70-200mm L series. Zoom works great and is reasonably fast. Lens is fairly inconspicuous with its black finish and you won’t be mistaken for pro photographer. Overall it is good value for money and if you are looking for a carry around lens for quick snaps outside the playground or inside and auditorium, this is the lens for you. But if you are a picture quality freak and do not mind carrying the tripod around, checkout the 70-200mm L.
