The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a lightweight and versatile lens perfect for portraits and close-up work. With sharp optics, effective image stabilization, and 0.5x macro capability, it offers great value for the price.
Pros:
• Sharp images, even wide open
• 0.5x macro for detailed shots
• 5-stop image stabilization
• Smooth, quiet STM autofocus
• Nice background blur (bokeh)
Cons:
• Slight softness at edges at f/2
• Some chromatic aberration in high contrast
• Plastic build, no weather sealing
Verdict:
An excellent all-around lens for RF shooters who want portrait and macro functionality in one affordable package.

This lens is perfect. Great weight and build quality. The focus motors are a bit louder than normal but it isn’t an inconvenience. I normally put it in MF so it is not “breathing” when not aimed at a subject. One note, it is a MACRO lens as well. This means that it is capable of focusing on very small increments and very close up to your subject. This also means that the lens takes quite some time to go from “macro mode” to “normal”. It’s an excellent 85mm prime to begin your lens arsenal even a good starting point into the “L” series lenses.

If you have been debating about getting an 85mm prime lens for your canon mirrorless body, this is a no brainer. With fantastic macro capabilities, great bokeh with the 1.8 f-stop and overall light weight. This lens also is great for portrait work and landscape/architecture if you want to dive into additional forms of photography.

Perfection and easy on the wallet. If you can find one, get this lens. This can go toe to toe with $3,000 glass for a fraction of the price. The auto focus can be a but sluggish, but the images are tac sharp and the bokeh is sooooo good.

I have practicing photography since 8 years now . And hands down this lenses is one of those lenses which will get your 500$. Back in a shoot. The photos taking from this lense are Soo sharp that you might get goosebumps seeing your portraits. Canon has an expensive version of the same which is excellent in its own way with better f stop but for 3 times the price feels more expensive. This is the best lense if you are getting started with your earnings in photography if you are a hobbyist still a excellent choice pair it with a nice ND filter and see the magic in a nice diffused sunny light

I was on the fence getting this lens but after seeing samples of other photographers I decided to get this lens and I am not disappointed, its sharp and does a great job for what I need. I couldn't see spending money on the more expensive 85mm from Canon and glad I went this route. It is a bit slow and noisy but didn't bother me on my test shots and it will be fun using this in the future

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 is a fantastic lens for both portraits and close-up detail. It delivers beautiful image quality with sharp focus and creamy bokeh that flatters subjects effortlessly. The added bonus of 1:2 macro capability makes it incredibly versatile, perfect for capturing intricate textures and small details. Image stabilization works well, even in low light, and autofocus is smooth and quiet. For its price, performance, and flexibility, this lens is a real gem in the RF lineup.

This len is a sharp, lightweight, and very versatile portrait lens with creamy bokeh. Its image stabilization helps with handheld shooting, though autofocus can be a bit slow. It’s an affordable and well-rounded option for portrait and macro photography.

Overall, for the price, this lense is hard to beat. Very sharp, fast(ish) focus, great compression. The bokeh and stabilization are awesome. My one nitpick is that the focus isn't super fast. It's okay, but I definitely notice some of my photos not coming out as sharp as I'd like. But when it's focused, it's beautifully sharp. Overall I'd definitely recommend it!

Excellent quality in manufacturing, image sharpness and the Macro function is of another level, it is not heavy, it has stabilization that combined with the stabilization of the camera gives incredible results, even if the camera does not have a stabilizer in the sensor, the autofocus works perfectly and the selection of the focus point are perfect, I recommend it 100%.

This is the best option at it's cost for an 85-100mm lens in the RF line. I used this lens to take portraits and a lot more at a wedding recently and it delivered 100%. Are there better lenses available. SURE, but they're 500-2000 dollars more.

If you don’t currently own anything higher than an 85mm, I highly recommend. It’s not extremely fast with focusing but in most cases, it’ll get the job done. At first I was worried that the f2.0 wasn’t going to be bright enough but for $600 f2.0 is plenty wide. This is my go-to lens for portrait photography and street photography as I don’t need to be physically close to my subject to get a nice shot of them/it.
Being a macro lens, you can also get some impressive tight shots. Toggling the 1.6 crop factor gives you approx the same magnification as a 136mm which looks amazing with macro shots.

The Canon RF f/2 Macro lens is very sharp with snappy AF, great colors and contrast- as you would expect from Canon. It is also stabilized which is a big plus shooting portraits in low light. IS is not that big of a deal in macro because I often shoot with a tripod for macro shots. Though, plastic has been used extensively in its construction it still feels solid while being light. Great lens for portraits and macro shooting! Best Buy service, like always, is excellent!!!

The Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is an amazing lens. It takes very sharp photos with beautiful background blur. The image stabilization works really well, and the autofocus is fast and quiet. I love that it can also shoot close-up (macro) pictures with great detail. It’s light, easy to carry, and perfect for portraits, products, and everyday use. Highly recommend!

A solid lens that is a good combo of portrait and macro. The macro capabilities is what sold me on this lens, I had been wanting to get an upgraded macro lens for quite a few years now, but had decided to wait until I could get a new body too (I upgraded from the Rebel T3i to the EOS R). In comparison to my old body and lenses, I have no complaints! All photos taken with the RF 85mm f/2 lens, and EOS R Body.

Perfect portrait and bokeh lens, and it's really sharp. It's not real macro, don't buy it if you wanna shooting macro. There is a little issue about auto speed focus its slow but for portrait photography does not need fast AF.

Underrated for its price point. The f2 is enough to get beautiful bokeh. The video works wonderfully too. Be sure to set it on macro or portrait, depending on the use, to prevent out of focus as it takes a while for it to change modes. Only con is no weather sealing. Lovely first lens
