Format SSD before using to get fast transfer rates

*Reformat your drive with NTFS or exFAT using the Default allocation size prior to using* I got very disappointing transfer rates before I reformatted it. Pro: Compact 4TB Fast SSD Storage! I easily got 500MB/s+ write speeds for large files, and ~100MB/s for smaller files (4-5MB photos) Much faster than 4TB Rotating disk external drives. The included cable is convenient for both USB-A and C Cons: The drive format out of the box is complete garbage. I was only getting 5-10MB/s transfer rates for small photos and was about to return the drive. The transfer rates for photos were slower than a rotating drive out of the box. After I reformatted with NTFS or exFAT using the default allocation size, the write speeds approached those expected of an SSD.

I bought this Crucial X6 SE 4TB external ssd for my Xbox Series X. Very tiny product. Comes with an adapter usb-c to usb-a. Transfer speeds, read-write are great. Around 800mb. If you need extra space for older Xbox One / 360 games this is the best option. 100% price/performance product. Don't think to buy any other ssd. Definitely recommended.

first impression after seeing the box was, wow this a small product, and then you open it and see how small this crucial X6 really is, i was impressed how compact this SSD the device is 4TB it has this matted black finished and its very simple, you have the name at the front and another name at the back that also listed with 4TB markings. the packaging is very simple it comes with USB C cord thats a bout 4 inc, and an extra USB C to USB A incase your computer doesnt support USB C. 4TB is huge space, crucial mention that you can upload up to 20,000 photos, 100 hrs of videos it will be awhile before i could even test those, mainly using this SSD to transfer my games from my PC hardrive. at the front of the box they also mention that reading speed of X6 is up to 800MB and they from my test its pretty close which is amazing. going back on how small this SSD its so compact that if youre the type of person who travels alot id make sure to keep your eye on this little monster, its small and light enough for to lose it, be very careful, but wow im just impressed on how much technology have changed, comparing this to my older HDD 2TB the size difference in size is massive. the other great thing about this the X6 is that you can also use it for your gaming consoles, PS5 does have USB C so you wouldn't technically need the extra adapter they provide, but if you have Xbox consoles, it doesn't have USB C, which mean you'll need the USB C to USB A that Crucial provided in the box. i have notice loading speed on my console games after using X6, from transferring game files to loading a game there's definitely a difference i highly recommend X6 i think its a great small device that can offer up to 4TB with an amazing speed, couldnt think a single negative thing to say about this product, it does what it say it can do and the extra USB C to USB A adapter thats included in the box which would make this a solid 5 star, Crucial didnt have to provide that but they did it anyway. thank you Crucial, satisfied customer here.

I've only had it for a month and I get this message: "macOS can’t repair the disk “DJ Gato SSD”. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can." I spent almost 2 days transfering all my data and this expensive little thing goes down? So disappointed!

LARGE CAPACITY - SMALL SIZE - FAST SSD

The Crucial X6 4TB USB External Solid State Drive (SSD) is a new model in the Crucial X6 product series with an enormous 4TB capacity, a compact and lightweight profile and a claim of up to 800 MB/s sequential read speeds. The other available capacities offered for the Crucial X6 are 1TB and 2TB models which claim sequential read speeds of up to 540 MB/s. Presumably, the significant difference in speed is predominantly, if not exclusively attributable to the difference in controller/bus technology. The 1TB and 2TB models are known to be SATA drives, while the new 4TB version is evidently PCIe/NVMe. The faster PCIe/NVMe technology is also available in the Crucial X8 SSD series, which also claims faster speeds. This important information pertaining to utilization of PCIe/NVMe technology in the X6 SSD is not published by Crucial in any of the marketing literature, nor is it listed on the Crucial website, including the Support page. Crucial, whose parent company is Micron, is a well-established and well-respected manufacturer of flash memory and SSD consumer products. I have purchased Crucial memory for several PCs through the years, and the factory installed SSD in one of my Dell laptops is a Crucial SSD . The Crucial X6 case is manufactured of black plastic, with rounded-over edges all around. Although the only apparent opening for potential admittance of dust or liquid is the single USB-C connector, the device does not carry an IP rating as a sealed device. Crucial claims that the X6 SSD has been drop tested to 6.5’ on a carpeted floor, but there is no listing of testing certifications or standards in support of that claim. The dimensions of the Crucial X6 are approximately 2-20/32” (67mm) x 2-1/2” (64mm) x 3/8” (8mm) thick at the edges. The Crucial X6 weighs only 1.4 oz (41g). It is both lightweight and compact. Furnished in the box with the Crucial X6 “Special Edition” is an almost 9-1/2” cable terminated with USB-C connectors on both ends and a USB-C to USB-A adaptor. The multi-language printed insert which is also included provides nothing more than the terms of the Crucial Warranty, and the Crucial website URL for support. The Crucial X6 carries a three (3) year warranty, however some other Crucial products carry a five year warranty. Portable SSDs are extraordinarily convenient and useful for many purposes. Video content producers and photographers find them to be essential. Given their large capacity and high data transfer rates they are ideal for those purposes as well as data backup and storage, and notably, for use as a portable file store when using multiple computers, and particularly when travelling away from home or primary workplace. The Crucial X6 is generally well-suited to working when away from a primary computer. When travelling “light”, the Crucial X6 is a good accompaniment to an extremely portable 13.3” Chromebook. That compact, lightweight pair obviously can’t run AutoCAD, but they easily accommodate working with Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files and other functionality not requiring hauling around a large, heavy and powerful laptop. Of course, even when travelling with a Windows laptop, the Crucial X6 SSD is an excellent choice for an external SSD to tether to the laptop. It is extremely useful to be able to “take it all”, and 4TB of capacity is a substantial amount of storage. An important aspect of the selection criteria for portable drives can be data security. The potential for compromised or exposed sensitive or private data, through loss or theft of the drive may be an important consideration, particularly when travelling. Unfortunately, the Crucial X6 does not offer any physical security, such as a biometric fingerprint reader, nor is there any hardware or software based data encryption included with the drive. The Crucial X6 is preformatted in exFAT, which is appropriate for both Windows PCs, Chromebooks, Macs and many gaming systems. It can easily be quick-formatted to NTFS if desired. Crucial has a very useful drive management application named Storage Executive, which is available for download from the Crucial website for use on Windows 64 BIT systems, only. Unfortunately Storage Executive does not recognize the newer 4TB model of the X6 drive. Crucial represents that it currently recognizes the older, 1TB and 2TB versions, and the X8 drives. There is no visual indicator for drive activity or power on the Crucial X6 SSD. I believe that an LED drive activity lamp would be a nice feature. The high transfer rate specifications for the Crucial X6 4TB SSD are an impressive 800 MB/s for Sequential Reads, however no specification is provided for Sequential Write speeds. Notably other large capacity PCIe/NVMe based SSDs, including the Crucial X8 2TB portable SSD as well as portable SSDs from Samsung, SanDisk and others are rated for 1050 MB/s Sequential Reads and 1000 MB/s Sequential Wrties. The Crucial Support representative with whom I spoke declined to address the roughly 20% difference in specifications. Fast SSD data transfer rates are attributable to the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) bus, NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) memory and USB 3.2 Gen2 connectivity. However, those high data transfer rates are only achievable when the host computer is similarly equipped with USB 3.2 Gen2 (10 Gb/s) interface. My test speeds were limited by the USB 3.0 ports on both of the laptops available for testing. USB 3.0, data transfer rates were measured with Crystal DiskMark 7.0 at 449 Mb/s Sequential Reads and 435 Mb/s Sequential Writes. Those speeds were only about 1% - 3% below what I measured for the faster Samsung and San Disk drives utilizing the identical test platform. Nevertheless, based on anecdotal observation, the Crucial X6 4TB SSD is very fast. Of course there are even faster SSD drives available, notably those models which are rated for up to 2000 MB/s speeds. The Crucial X6 does become warm when attached to a computer, and generates heat in proportion to activity when it is actively in use. Large data transfers generate palpable, but not uncomfortable or alarming levels of heat. Typically, this type of drive employs a layer of PCM (Phase Change Material) to somewhat mitigate the heat generated by active use (presumably encapsulated paraffin wax). Overall, the Crucial X6 4TB SSD is excellent. It offers large capacity, fast data transfer rates and a compact and lightweight profile. I find it to be an excellent drive for photography and videography. The Crucial X6 4TB SSD is certainly worthy of consideration and I am comfortable recommending it!

The Crucial 4TB portable SSD is a fantastic purchase. The main features that I like is speed and it's quiet. Hook it up via the USB cable which comes with it and you're in business. Most people don't know that it's a hard drive because of its small footprint. It's small enough to put in your pocket and it's so quiet (because its solid state) you won't hear it doing its job! I used it for several hours and it was just slightly warm to the touch. Just know that it's a bit pricey (and as we all know everything is relative), but I found it was worth the price. If you need additional storage, this 4TB hard drive is the ticket! 2 thumbs up for this one.

Pros. Got it on sale. Fast, crystal mark showing 800R/W small and doesn't get hot ( Came with copper padding and Thermal pads) 2 hours of copying 2.5tb of 4k files shock proof for accidental drops, not throws ... Cons really cheap cable Conclusion smaller than a m.2 2280, about the size of 2 2242 side by side as fast as my custom m.2 drives with grizzly thermal pads and doesnt get as hot as those .

I love this drive. It is small, sleek, fast, and has worked like a charm. I also love that it is using USB C and and comes in a large storage size. I like this a lot better than the WD drives I've had such as the My Passport, My Passport Ultra, My Book Duo, etc. This is a fantastic drive.

I purchased this drive on sale for about $380. It has more than enough storage to play non Series X games on my Series X. The performance is definetely better than a traditional 5400 RPM portal HDD but it is not the fastest portable SSD out there. If you are not constantly writing content to the drive, then I think that you will be happy with your purchase. If you are using this for photogrpahy or video editing then you may be disappointed with slower speeds.
