A Big Upgrade From previous gen

Honestly, Im impressed. Last year’s model, while not bad, was a bit of a letdown for me. I had the G5 for a while and it left a lot to be desired. This G15 is basically a ripoff of their Alienware model with inferior build quality but Im not complaining. The m15 is a gorgeous machine and if this G15 minics that, that’s okay with me. Temperatures are so much better than last year’s model. Fans don’t run nearly as loud. The Ryzen 7 is a monster. The 3050ti is not the most inpressive card but I got my laptop open box for $850 and I’ll be darned if you can find a better soec laptop for under $900. I really wanted a 3060 but the 3050ti does okay. I mostly play games like Apex and Rocket League with dont use a ton a vram but I’ve also played Red Dead Redemption and it runs about 60-70fps on high. I did add another 8gb of ram to make framerates stable. A system like this deserves 16gb of ram. I really enjoy the orange backlit keyboard. If its not RGB, it’s usually always the typical “gamer red” color. So orange is a nice change. The screen reportedly doesnt have the best response time but I havent noticed any ghosting when running games at 120hz. Its worth mentioning that I downgraded my laptop to Windows 10. It comes with windows 11 but I was having issues on 11 like the battery life staying at 99% on battery power and not displaying accurate battery life. As soon as I went to 10, battery life started reporting normally. Overall, Im happy with this purchase. Last year’s models were a mess. I even rememebr seeing the G7 throttle games when it wasn’t on a flat surface (somethijg to do with how the gpu was seated). It’s nice to see these laptops being great offerings as gaming machines again.

I bought this for gaming and it runs great! I had a few issues in the first year with overheating and the charging wire has never fit into the charging port correctly. So i replaced charger with one off amazon and did a factory reset which fixed the overheating issue. Overall i really love the laptop and if you are buying it as a primary gaming laptop it works well. I play BG3, Divinity, Sims and so on if these are the type of things you are looking to use it for. Also the overall look of it is really nice and the screen is a great size and its fast.

I bought this model over a year ago with a dedicated purpose: to smoothly run games like Fallout New Vegas and the old Witcher games without breaking the bank. Mission accomplished. For a few bucks more I also upgraded the RAM, first by adding a second 8gb stick and then eventually by replacing those and adding dual 16gb sticks. I also added 2TB storage in the SSD2 slot. Now this machine handles WAY more demanding games than I initially intended with relative ease.

This Machine Feels Great To Use

It comes with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H w/ Radeon Graphics. For those Desktop PC nerds out there, it is about equal to the Ryzen 7 3800x desktop processor according to benchmarks. It’s got 8 cores and 16 threads. Which means this thing is an absolute unit of a processor and will tackle any task you throw at it with ease. It’s blazing fast and makes the computer an absolute joy to use because everything opens and responds nearly instantly. The NVMe gen 3x4 SSD also helps greatly with the overall speed. But more on that later. Real world usage means you can video edit, photo edit, architecture, coding, etc. on this without any issues. So, for a student or business professional this has got you covered across the entire board. It comes with an RTX 3050 TI mobile graphics card. Which comes with 4 GB of VRAM which fills up fast with newer games. I would have preferred to see an 3060 which comes with 6 GB VRAM. This guy is targeted for 1080p gaming at high settings. I found this to be mostly accurate (as depending on how well optimized the game you are playing will also affect it). But you can easily play most games at 1080p 60 fps High Settings or if you want to squeeze a bit more ~100 FPS at medium/low settings. I tested it out on GTA 5 (75 – 115 fps on normal/high settings), GTA Online (58 – 75 fps) (limited by poor optimization), Apex Legends low settings (>120 fps), Aim Labs (>120 fps). So, this is perfect for a causal or on the go gamer. Cooling is good on this guy. I was getting about 60 – 80 degrees Celsius when playing games. Around 30 – 40 during idle and normal use. Fans when up extremely close (practically touching) were 72 dB but sitting at normal distance away at max fans was 55 dB. It can be distracting but that’s the price you pay for high performance, with good cooling, in a laptop chassis. The keyboard never got hot or even really warm. You can use this on your lap when not gaming but will notice some warmth. It comes with 8 GB of GDDR4 3200MHz RAM. Which to me is the lowest you should go on any modern machine much less a gaming machine. This will get you by currently without much issue. However, if you are doing complex workflows or editing it’s going to be a bottleneck. With my normal workflow (browser open with multiple tabs, itunes, email, word documents, etc.) I get to about 7/8 GB. I would recommend upgrading it to 16 GB as soon as you can which is an easy and usually affordable upgrade. This CPU supports DDR4 - Up to 3200MHz and LPDDR4 - Up to 4266MHz. But if you aren’t running into issues, I wouldn’t worry about it. Just keep in mind if you are experiencing slowdowns to check your RAM usage. It comes with a 512 GB Gen 3 NVMe SSD. Which is fast (~2500 - 3000 Read/Write Speeds). Which is great. The only thing faster is the Gen 4 SSD’s which this doesn’t support. See an improvement here won’t be seen for nearly all users. This storage size for a gaming laptop is simply not enough. As a lot of modern age games are 75 – 100 GB in size. With some of them pushing past 100 GB. Which means you’ll fill this thing up quickly with just a few games. That’s not even accounting for normal storage of photos, music, programs, etc. So, buying a secondary drive for it (which it has a slot for) is recommended (two slots for NVMe drives up to 1TB and second up to 2 TB). It doesn’t support NVMe Gen 4 drives. The 15.6-inch 1080p 120 Hz IPS WVA (max 250 nits) (45% NTSC) (35 ms latency) narrow border display is on the upper end of laptop displays. Which are normally terrible and I’m very pleased with this one. It looks great but looking critically at it exposes some flaws. Mine has some black crushing and the sRGB color range is not 100% which is disappointing in 2021. But it has great contrast and colors are accurate enough to not be distracting. Unfortunately, since this is a gaming laptop latency is critical and this is a slow display where I can feel the lag when playing games which pulls me out of the game world. I think this stems from both a slow screen and slow keyboard. I also tend to be hyper receptive to lag so others may not notice, and you can acclimate to it. Or just hook it up to an external display and keyboard and problem solved. It comes with Wifi 6 AX201 2x2 up to 2.4 Gbps and Bluetooth 5.1 card. In other words, top of the line wireless and Bluetooth performance. Which works great and is perfect for gaming. I pay for 300/30 internet and I got 350/30 with 5 – 11 ms latency when testing on a 5Ghz Wifi 5 router. It comes with a 6-Cell 86Whr Battery. I’ve been able to get about 4 – 6 hours of hardcore everyday use (multiple web pages, playing videos but NO video games, word documents, email, opening and closing programs, downloading things, etc.) before needing to plug back in. I could get more if I actually tried by turning off the backlit keyboard, reducing screen brightness, and changing battery settings. Gaming you can get about 2 – 3 hours. Which for how much power this guy is packing I don’t find it to be bad but it isn’t great either. I tried to see if the keyboard was mechanical or not. I don’t think it is. It feels like your typical laptop keyboard with short throw keys that quickly bottom out with a satisfying tactile bump. They require mild/moderate pressure to actuate. They have attractive letting, with orange coloring, and orange backlit keys that they label “hot coral”. There is no RGB. It feels great to type on. It’s alright to game on. But I do notice some latency with it which is a bit of a bummer on a gaming laptop. I plugged it into fast external display and I still felt the latency. I plugged in an external gaming keyboard and the latency disappeared. So, having latency from the laptop and keyboard was confirmed from my testing. The touchpad is small but absolute fantastic. Probably the best touchpad I’ve used on a laptop. It’s very responsive, is easy to move your finger across, and has a nice crisp click when pressing from the middle of the keyboard down which requires mild/moderate force. I can easily get all my work done without running into any issues which includes highlighting, copy pasting, accurate presses, etc. Gestures also work great. But I recommend an actual mouse for gaming. Speakers are average. They sound good. On YouTube max volume I got about 70 – 80 dB. On iTunes (who still uses that?!) I got 80 – 85 dB. Sound is clear, isn’t muddy. Solid. Some other aspects not mentioned. There is a numpad built into the keyboard which is a nice touch. But there is no Windows Hello or Fingerprint login which is a bummer. They keyboard does have a bit of a different design due to this. So if you are particular about your keyboards check the picture. You can turn on “Game Shift” by pressing FN+G) which activates dynamic performance mode via Alienware command center that maximizes fan speed to keep system cool. Which works well. On the right side of the device you have 2 USB ports. Some documentation says these are 2.0 other say 3.2 gen 1. The one furthest from you is PowerShare. On the left of the device you have an RJ45 ethernet port and 3.5 headphone/mic aux port. On the back you have an USB C 3.2 port that doesn’t support charging but does support display port, USB 3.2 port, HDMI 2.0 port (I don’t think 2.1), and the power in port. A lot of those were hard to find the correct specs as they weren’t listed.

EXCELLENT ENTRY LEVEL GAMING LAPTOP – (add RAM)

DELL - G15 - 15.6" FHD GAMING LAPTOP - AMD RYZEN 7 - 8GB MEMORY - NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3050 TI GRAPHICS - 512GB SSD - GRAY MODEL:G15RE-A954GRY-PUS EXCELLENT ENTRY LEVEL GAMING LAPTOP – (needs more RAM) At its foundation the DELL - G15 has the makings of an excellent entry-level gaming laptop. It has a great processor (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H). It has a relatively powerful Nvidia 3050TI GPU, it has all the right ports (usb 3.2, hdmi, physical ethernet connectivity and more). The screen is fantastic. It is one of the best screens I have ever seen on a laptop. It is well designed for maximum cooling and seems sturdy. If you want to play top tier games at better quality, you will need to invest a small amount in upgrading (at least doubling) the system RAM. Some games won’t even load with only 8GB of system RAM (for example FORZA 4). Most games run pretty well (DOOM Eternal, Star Wars Squadrons, more) at HIGH and even Ultra settings at around +/- 100fps. Although on DOOM for example if you try to put settings above HIGH it will remind you that you don’t have enough VRAM (only 4GB of Video RAM on the 3050ti more on this later). Overall, the DELL - G15 has a good solid build and high quality components throughout. You will want to invest is more RAM (inexpensive upgrade). Anytime that you can find a gaming computer at this price point with discrete graphics, especially a current generation RTX card you should grab it. PRO’s - Fantastic screen, very sharp and crips text and graphics - Lots of Ports for external connectivity - Lots of fans and vents for cooling - Good Performing CPU and GPU SETUP / MISC The DELL - G15 was easy enough to setup and get started, with the usual windows update and reboot cycles. The DELL - G15 update software also found upgrades that windows missed and loaded them easily enough. There were the normal few bloatware programs included that are easily removed. Due to the power hungry GPU there is a giant power brick (120 watts). Pressing the “G” button instantly puts the laptop into high performance mode and it works as expected. The keyboard had a good feel and felt right for gaming and the RED backlights are a nice touch. It is a heavy laptop (nearly 6 lbs) but for some reason it does not feel that heavy. The screen is mounted a little forward on the base which makes it better balanced. I was able to use the laptop outside and still see the screen very well. I tried not to get too bogged down in test results / benchmarks and focus instead of its intended usability (A Gaming Laptop). See my pics for various benchmarks if you are curious. I did not extensively test the battery life, as if you are gaming you are going to want it plugged in to power the GPU at full speed. It lasted at least a few hours while I was outside. The cooling is fantastic, even when running it “on my lap” it was not too hot. The cooling system is well thought out and probably accounts for the added weight. SUMMARY / RECOMMENDATION As it is configured at this time of review the DELL G15 (MODEL:G15RE-A954GRY-PUS) would be ideal for most any student (through college level), and casual gamers who want some portability. For a “student” computer is punches way above others in a similar price range. For a gaming computer it has a good base to start with, and can be expanded for more memory / storage hungry games. I think overall it is one of the better values to performance and potential performance out there is this form factor. ONE AREA OF CAUTION ABOUT THE GPU: Although it has a powerful GPU (Nvidia RTX 3050ti) with RAY TRACING and DLSS, this eventually will be the limiting factor for heavy gaming, as it only has 4GB of video RAM (VRAM), which can’t be expanded. This is a problem from NVIDIA (not Dell), as the GPU is plenty powerful, benchmarks well, and normally plays well. In some cases like DOOM it forces you into lower quality settings. I hate to label this as an “entry level” gaming laptop, as the CPU is fantastic and very high end, the screen is fantastic and very high end, but the GPU has bottlenecks keeping it from ever being much more than an upper “entry level” gaming laptop. The next Tier of GPU’s will probably increase your costs by about 25-50%. FINAL WORD Overall, it is a great gaming laptop for the price. If this is your price point, then this is probably the best laptop you can get in today’s market.

First gaming laptop I've felt was a good sub

Constant traveling has always left me looking longingly at a good gaming laptop. I've tried and tried over the years but the FPS sacrifice for portability just meant that I'd stick with less graphic intensive games while out and about and gladly return to my desktop when I returned (or if I was feeling really ambitious I'd pack up my whole desktop to visit family.) I can reliably say that I'd be ok just taking this laptop to game with now though. My opening foray after getting setup (and three restarts for updates and having to manually download directX updates because the standard installs weren't getting it done) was with Apex Legends. Now while graphically intensive, it's not a RDR2 or Assassin's Creed but the sheer need to keep up with its fast pace means other gaming laptops have quickly bogged down. With the G15 I was legitimately able to play without any slapping my forehead moments. FPS at rest ranged from 115-120 and at worst during certain menu screens it dropped down to around 55. For the most part we hovered at a comfortable 75-80 during firefights. I know it's passe to not have a svelte laptop body but I appreciate the back-end bulge of the laptop as it allows the screen to come away from the base slightly making it easier to see and it also seems to provide some nice airflow which consolidates most of the hot exhaust. Left back side, right back side, and the very back all had VERY hot air coming out but that means it wasn't heating up the bottom of the laptop or the keyboard area, etc... Just make sure you stay aware of where you're setting the laptop as closing off one of those areas due to something sitting right next to the laptop probably messes up the air flow. Screen quality is super clear. Has that normal slightly dusky look of a VA as compared to an IPS but once you're in a game it really pops. Build quality seems on point and it is a SOLID piece of tech aka it's fairly heavy but that's probably just compared to the normal super thin laptops everyone's carrying around nowadays. I really liked the faux-stone design of the keyboard area as it gives it a fun I'm a gamer vibe without being so over the top that other employees will stare at you wondering if you're working or gaming. Final notes: As mentioned, there's a LOT of updates that need to be completed on this one before you jump in. Had to do three rounds of Windows updates first before Geforce would allow me to update the graphic drivers. Then had to manually go find the DirectX download after Origin/EA/Apex kept failing as usually games will install it but maybe it was missing certain files. Once you get past all of that, it was easy peasy but just wanted to note as I'm sure it can be frustrating when you can't just jump right in. After that though this little laptop flies and provided a great experience while gaming (and doing all the various other daily tasks that one does with a laptop.)

Entry Level Gaming Laptop with some Potential

I’m going to come out and say up front that I was a little disappointed with the performance of this laptop. It struggled to stay above 30 FPS on warzone. Forza 4 gave me a warning that the machine did not have enough memory and that it might not perform well, and the game Control would just not launch at all. That could have been an issue with the drivers or maybe the xbox game pass app. I was expecting better performance out of the RTX 3050 TI paired with the powerful Ryzen 7 - 5800H. The laptop only comes with 8gb of Ram, so I am going to buy another 8gb stick and install it. Hopefully this will bump up it up a bit. I believe the RTX 3050TI in this machine only has 4gb of VRAM so that will also be a bottleneck for graphically intensive games as well. I think the machine could have some potential with a Ram upgrade. But don’t expect to run modern titles at high / ultra in 1080P. Less graphically intensive games like fortnite, valorant and Lineage 2 ran good at a steady 60 FPS. Build quality on the laptop is as expected. It feels like mostly hard plastic. The bottom cover was a little difficult to pry off but was easy to put back on. The memory and SSDs can be upgraded. It has a 2nd m.2 nvme drive but you’ll need your own screw, and maybe a mount and heat shield for it. I did like the screen on this laptop even though it isn’t rated as being highly color accurate. The screen has a nice matte anti reflective surface and contrast ratio is good. The colors are actually pretty vibrant to my eyes. The keys feel a little small and it took a little getting used to but overall, they are comfortable to type and play game with. The trackpad is small and made of plastic also but it is smooth and accurate. Most gamers will be using a mouse or a game pad either way. One thing I did like about the design of this laptop is many of the ports being located on the back of the machine. Less cables to get in your way. The laptop also has nice large vents for air flow and it keeps the laptop running cool. It is hard for me to recommend this laptop to anyone looking to play many of today’s new games on this machine.Even though the hardware in it is new, It feels dated, It only runs slightly better than a mid range gaming laptop I purchased 5 years ago. If you are just a casual gamer, or looking to buy an affordable laptop with some gaming capabilities then maybe. Just dont expect to be able to run Call of Duty, the upcoming Battlefield or any other first person shooter or racing game at high resolution and frame rates. I think this machine will run games best at 720P and Low / Medium settings in 1080P. If all you want is a laptop for every day tasks, light gaming and maybe some photo and video editing, then this machine might work for you. Pros: Fast SSD Decent build quality Runs cool Nice contrast and Colors on display Ryzen 7 will run many applications swiftly Cons: Only 8GB of RAM Only 4GB of VRAM on the RTX 3050 TI The white-ish gray material of the laptop gets dirty easily

Overall, this laptop is an exceptional entry level gaming laptop with good specs (current gen Ryzen and a 3000 series Nvidia GPU) and excellent cooling. The design takes from it’s Alienware big brothers and the two tone back and gray (with a paint splatter effect) is simply yet refreshing. It does come with some Dell, Alienware, and McAfee bloatware, but that is par for the course on any prebuilt computer. Performance wise, I was seeing above 60fps on the Borderlands 3 built in benchmark. In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s built-in benchmark, I was seeing 53fps average at medium settings. It also comes with a one button click (F9) “high performance” mode for when you are gaming, which is nice since Alienware software will tweak the device for you. I for one appreciate this as manual tuning can take time and you run the risk of making things worse if you don’t know what you’re doing. The keyboard is nice with minimal key travel, but not too little where you aren’t receiving the feedback needed to know if you are pressing the keys. It does come with a ten-key, which I love. The cooling on this device keeps the keyboard temps cool, which is an issue with a lot of gaming laptops now a days. I have no reservations recommending this laptop for entry level PC gaming as you are getting a well-known brand, current gen specs, and very nice thermal cooling. Nice job on Dell’s part!
